TTPD + Themes: Stages of Grief
My interpretation of Fortnight (a combination of other awesome analyses I've seen + some of my own thoughts)
Starting off with where Hits Different ends - an important relationship ends
She's supposed to be sent away, which could mean sent away from London or metaphorically "sent away" from being in relationships. (I know this seems to be a reference to mental health services, but I think it can also be interpreted differently.)
She was struggling with the end of the relationship and relied on alcohol to numb the pain. She thought people (or maybe him specifically) would notice, but it felt like nobody really cared.
She acknowledges the end of the relationship wasn't really anyone's fault, but she can't help feeling betrayed by her ex - maybe he didn't put in enough effort in the end, maybe she felt like she had to be the one to end it even though he pulled away, or maybe he moved on quickly.
Fortnight could represent a shorter time than expected. Not necessarily two weeks, but it felt so short to her because she expected the relationship to last forever.
Now that it's over and she hasn't been "sent away", they might live close together in London or run in the same social circles. So they keep seeing each other or hearing about each other through friends.
She knows no one is to blame so they're able to be civil towards one another.
But he either seems to have moved on already or is more comfortable with his life than she is with hers. And she's jealous and wishes she was comfortable and in a better mental state. Like with the first verse, no one's at fault, but she can't help feeling angry anyways.
Here, she acknowledges her poor mental state or how she feels being trapped in her life (with the pressure of fame that cycles through obsessions with her).
She moves on with a "miracle move-on drug", which is a new, intense relationship that she thought would make her feel better. But the excitement doesn't last very long.
She mourns the loss of her relationship(s) and reminds herself that at least she got to experience that love even if it didn't last.
Starts out similar to the first chorus.
And then adds the line about her husband cheating. This could reference her new intense relationship or reference her career/fame like the Ivy theory. It contrasts the wife line by directly showing that she's going through a lot and wants to end whatever situation is bringing her more pain - just as she sees her ex seeming happier and she's jealous.
The repetition of this bridge could be like her running thoughts. She keeps thinking about how much she loved her ex and how it used to make her so happy, now she's heartbroken and angry and jealous, but at least she had that love during her lifetime.
And the song ends with her moving back to the US, away from everything.
They can both move on in theory and they can both avoid each other now that she's gone, but it feels like she (or they) will never feel that same excitement and spark that they had with each other.

rich people are so boring. Private jets for intra-US travel? if i was a multimillionaire Iβd have my own old timey gilded train car and take my sweet ass time going everywhere. sorry, you wonβt see my ass for 5-7 business days while Iβm going through the mountains with no cell service but a well paid private chef that specializes in gluten free cuisine, bye
I love taylor but this definitely sounds cooler then a private jet.
TAYLOR SWIFT + different time period looks in music videos
As for βWhoβs Afraid of Little Old Me,β Swift revealed that she wrote the tune βalone, sitting at the piano in one of those moments when I felt bitter about just all the things we do to our artists as a society and as a culture.β βThereβs a lot about this particular concept on βThe Tortured Poets Department,'β she added. βWhat do we do to our writers, and our artists, and our creatives? We put them through hell. We watch what they create, then we judge it. We love to watch artists in pain, often to the point where I think sometimes as a society we provoke that pain and we just watch what happens.β
Taylor on βWhoβs Afraid of Little Old Meβ and TTPD (Variety)
The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time - one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure. This period of the authorβs life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted. This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.
And then all thatβs left behind is the tortured poetry.
