Since the giftee's favourite colour is blue and their favourite flower were daisies, I used blue bookcloth and incorporated the flowers through embroidery.
Will be adding further posts since Tumblr is only letting me include 10 photos v.v
AHHHHHHHHHHH THIS TURNED OUT SO FANTASTIC!!! I had so much fun talking to you about binding books, and the end result is absolutely incredible!!! Thank you so much for posting these photos, I am so honored that you took the time and effort to create a physical copy of this fic!!! <3
Just gonna write a few notes about my comic series because I thought uhhhh why not yeah teehee.
The art quality throughout the comic improves, but retaines the same amount of effort, meaning I got better at drawing because of this comic. I specifically went for a low effort art style for this comic so I wouldn't get burnt out.
LONG before I started drawing the comic itself, I made near 30 pages of storyboards that included 12 frames on each page. After doing all the storyboards, I started drawing the comic itself.
The story wasn't supposed to go beyond chapter 8. Yeah......... the story was originally going to abruptly end at chapter 8 on that lame last frame.
Between chapter 1 and 2, I decided to make the change of adding shading to the eyelids of the characters, as well as include eye color.
In chapter 1, Rouge was initially intended to invite Shadow on a 2 month long cruise. Due to not being able to make that work out, though, I ditched that idea entirely to go for just a regular old vacation to Mexico. Still, it's a rather long vacation, but uhhh, shut up. Fun fact: I talked to my mom to see what people do in Mexico while on vacation, because believe it or not, I have never stepped foot in Mexico before.
Shadow getting excited about going to Mexico in chapter 1 IS indeed a joke about how he likes Latinas (as Rouge also suggested.) The actual logic that was going through his head, though, since he doesn't actually like Latinas like that, was just that he'd been wanting to go to Mexico one day, but just didn't have an excuse until then.
In chapter 1 on the frame where Shadow says "I don't think anybody else would even consider babysitting a Chao for two entire months." there's an error where I forgot to show Peaches' dislike for being referred to as a baby, despite that being written in the storyboards. I somehow completely overlooked it. Also, Shadow said that not because he forgot about Vanilla and Cream, but because he already knew Peaches wanted to go to Sonic's house. This is far from the first time Sonic has babysat Peaches, so Shadow really trusts Sonic the most.
Shadow's phone in chapter 1 is colored to reference Maria.
Peaches being 6 years old is actually only chronologically recently in the story. Her birthday was in August, and Shadow's vacation takes place starting September. She only just turned 6.
Sonic asking for $200 dollars to babysit Peaches in chapter 1 is an extremely, extremely low amount of money. I did this on purpose, since Sonic doesn't mind babysitting Peaches, and was really only asking for that money to buy a bunk bed. In fact, Sonic lost quite a bit of money throughout the story, since he bought her food, clothes, etc... Point is, this was not actually a good deal on Sonic's end, but Sonic does nawt give a diddly darn.
In chapter 2, Peaches' pile of junk includes: A Sonic plush gifted to her at one of her previous birthdays (Chao garden reference), a Chao sized pogo stick that she'll never really be able to use again (Chao garden reference), a beach ball (Chao garden reference), a pencil, a book, a toy car (Chao garden reference), a plush koala, a cheese grater, and a beige bag with flowers. The cheese grater was a last minute addition to her pile of junk and didn't truly have any meaning behind it, but I like to say she just gets annoyed when she's at Sonic's house that he doesn't have a cheese grater, and she doesn't like when her quesadillas have cheese chunks instead of shredded cheese. The beige bag with pink flowers is a reference to the style of bag my grandma would buy for me and my siblings when she used to give us piano lessons. Those bags would hold our music books.
In the frame where Shadow and Peaches are walking out of the frame and Peaches has a bag on her head, I forgot to draw the yellow parts of the flowers on her bag.
When Shadow says "You will never see the light of day ever again," Shadow is actually saying "You will never seethe light of day ever again." I accidentally left out the space between see and the.
The frame right below the previously mentioned frame was drawn entirely with my non-dominant hand.
Sonic is blushing right after Shadow leaves while he suspiciously stares him down. This is because Sonic is enamored by typical Shadow behavior.
Tango has his own bedroom in Sonic and Tails' shared house. Sonic has his own bedroom as well, and Tails pretty much lives in the garage, which he's made to be his workshop. Tails hardly steps foot inside the house itself except to use the bathroom and get a snack, which is why Sonic is so comfortable saying it's his own house.
Most of the Shadow's Vacation drawings were done while I was ill or recovering from illness. I was so, so, so extremely sick while drawing the first one, hence why it's so ugly compared to the later ones. The second one, I was still recovering from that same illness, but I was less sick. As I got even less sick, I put more effort into them. My favorite Shadow's Vacation drawing has to be the last one.
The first frame of chapter 3: I forgot to color in the pancake in the pan Sonic is using.
The blueberry pancakes in chapter 3 are a near direct reference to the "Frankenstein pancakes" my mom would make sometimes on Saturdays. She would always, always, always make me and my siblings pancakes on Saturdays, and sometimes she'd make blueberry sauce and whipped cream for them. The reason why we called them Frankenstein pancakes was because the purple color of the sauce would make the yellow-ish pancakes turn green inside. The only difference between her pancakes and Sonic's pancakes was that I was too lazy to draw whipped cream.
Peaches is a picky eater while Tango is like a garbage disposal.
Sonic saying "You have to eat more than fruits and berries" is something my mother has directly told me throughout my childhood.
Shadow doesn't often say no to Peaches, hence why Sonic notices Peaches' behavior and immediately pins it to "Shadow sure spoils you at home, doesn't he?"
In chapter 3, Sonic made turkey sandwiches for lunch, which does not include fruits and berries, which is why Peaches would not like it.
Tails being tall is because he's 14 years old and is in the middle of going through puberty. On the topic of ages, Sonic is 21, Peaches is 6 (duh), Tango is 3 (duh), Shadow is also kinda sorta 21, Rouge is 24, Amy is 18, etc...
In the frame in chapter 3 where Tails asks what's up with Shadow's Chao, I forgot to color in her fork with fork color. Instead, her fork is strangely Peaches colored.
In Shadow's Vacation 2, a lot of people were debating what exactly they were eating. In the picture (that Rouge took), they have: Tamales, chips, red and green salsa, tacos (of some kind, idk), horchata, regular old ice water, flan, and a cup of coffee beans just for Shadow.
The jump between Peaches' stages of evolution between chapter 3 and 4 wasn't meant to be so abrupt. It seemed smoother in the storyboards, but the way I conveyed it in the actual comic just didn't work out so well, so she kinda goes from "Chao with a nose" to "near full baby hedgehog."
Peaches' evolution stage in chapter 4 includes slightly blue eye-whites and slightly white irises. Her Chao ball is still present (albeit small), and her inner ears are still slightly red. She doesn't have claws, she doesn't have any shading on her eyelids, her limbs are shorter, and her eyes are disconnected. On top of ALL OF THAT, she is very, very small, and isn't actually much bigger than her previous stage of evolution.
The reason why Sonic and Tails are so relaxed about throwing around "Chao die at 6" is because they assumed Peaches already knew. Soon after Peaches' outburst at such information, Sonic realized she didn't actually know, and was more gentle with her, hence him wiping her tears (if you didn't notice.) Tails, on the other hand, was a stupid idiot with his factual nerd brain and just kept going on and on about the subject without realizing how anxious it would eventually make Peaches.
When Sonic is drying Peaches' tears in chapter 4, I forgot to color in his shoe.
The concept of "second evolution" with Chao already exists, except it's really more subtle, and I don't think can really be considered evolution. An example of canon second evolution is that a newly evolved Sonic Chao is lime green, but as it evolves a second time, it becomes blue like Sonic. So after all of this story about "second evolution," Peaches has actually technically evolved a third time, if you're going by SA2's "second evolution." If you're going by Chao Tales, where the Chao just pops out of its cocoon as its second evolution-ed form, then yeah, I guess it really is a second evolution in the comic.
When Peaches is looking up sadly as Tails is saying "I assume a good chunk of Shadow's Bonding with her was a result of him teaching her how to speak..." I forgot to color in the tan color of her palms and feet. It's not that noticeable, but yeah, I forgot. I also accidentally capitalized "Chunk" in Tails' explanation.
In chapter 4, the section where Peaches and Tango are in bed and going to sleep wasn't originally going to be included at all. The storyboards for it were made in a completely different sketchbook, and it was just some spin-off story to show what Peaches thought of the whole concept of Chao dying at 5. Because I decided to include this, though, it gave me emotional ammunition for chapter 9.
The bunk bed that Peaches and Tango share has several shelves. Everything on said shelves belong to Tango, and the shelf to the left of Tango's bunk carries his various art supplies.
Shadow's Vacation 3 takes place at Cabo San Lucas. This is the place where Shadow drops his phone into the water, since they were on a boat.
In chapter 5, Peaches goes to hold Sonic's hand instead of Amy's because she sees Sonic as a father.
The last frame of chapter 5 was originally going to be Amy being a little sad that Peaches didn't want to hold her hand. I'm glad I changed this.
In Shadow's vacation 4, the goat character in the background is just a random dude and has no significance. The hedgehog in sandals keychain is a souvenir that Shadow thought was cute, thus he bought it.
In chapter 6, Tango is excited for clothing shopping because uhhhh yeah. Sonic and Peaches aren't quite excited for it, since to them it's a chore. To Tango, it's a fun day out.
Peaches wanted those specific pairs of socks because they were of fruits and berries. You never actually see her wearing them, though, because I was too frickin' lazy to draw them again. I hated drawing them.
The shoe part of chapter 6 is "so accurate" because that was the experience I would always have when I'd go shoe shopping with my uncle. My uncle was the one to buy shoes for me and my siblings.
I forgot to color Amy's ears in when she says "And I've picked out some outfits for Peaches to try on!"
A lot of people think outfit #1 is a reference to classic Amy, when it's actually a reference to nothing and is just some random outfit I decided to draw her in.
Outfit #2 is a direct reference to a sweater that I actually own, meaning it is actually not a reference to movie Maria (unless I'm somehow secretly Maria and have no idea.)
Outfit #5 is a reference to the style of clothing I'm pretty much always wearing (A t-shirt with cargo shorts.)
Outfit #8 isn't a reference to anything. Outfit #11 isn't a reference to anything except maybe Shadow's edgy style, so like father like daughter. Also, Tango loved those sunglasses so much that Sonic bought them for him.
Outfit #15 isn't a reference to anything.
In Shadow's Vacation 5, Shadow and Rouge are at the airport, ready to fly home.
In chapter 7, Peaches hugs Shadow because she's happy to see him. Of course she is; it's been 2 months. Shadow's only confused when she hugs him because he wasn't expecting to see his Chao as a full on hedgehog. Keep in mind, he was expecting Peaches the CHAO to be running out at him.
The reason why Peaches didn't know Chao die at 5 is because Shadow didn't know either. How could he teach her something he himself wasn't aware of?
In the last frame of chapter 7, Sonic is blushing again. He's sad to see Peaches go, but he's also really seeing that that is his family in front of him. Tango is also sad for Peaches to leave, since him and Peaches are sibling best friends.
The poster in the back of frame 1 of chapter 8 is foreshadowing to what's going to happen in the fanfiction. It's not particularly spoilers, so I'll say it here: Shadow doesn't see himself as being a good father.
Peaches' sweater in chapter 8 is a reference to Shades the Sissyhog.
The OC in chapter 8 is Quincy the Dik-dik. He's a pediatrician and his favorite color is pink. His catchphrase is "Lentils and sardines."
Quincy's clipboard is directly using the colors of the pancakes and forks in chapter 3. You can color select this yourself if you feel so inclined. There are also other colors that I reused, like Quincy's shirt being the same color as the flowers on Peaches' bag, Peaches shirt in chapter 9 being one of the greens on Quincy, etc...
Peaches being 27 pounds sounds very, very light, but I did the calculations, and her BMI still said she was obese, which is fitting for a Sonic character.
Shadow being confronted about Peaches' diet is when he really realizes that, "Damn, fruits and berries really aren't enough for a growing child!" but then at the same time, she was a Chao, so...
Shadow's phone in chapter 8 is the same color as Sonic's quills. This is unnecessarily in-depth in terms of lore for the comic, since it represents how Maria may be gone, but there are other important people in Shadow's life. Maria wouldn't have wanted him to be forever lingering on her death, making himself miserable.
Shadow makes sure Sonic knows he's on speakerphone just in case Sonic is tempted to say anything crazy or really weird, since Sonic may be known to do that.
Quincy does recognize that Shadow's "friend" is THE Sonic the Hedgehog, but doesn't say anything about it to remain professional.
In chapter 9, Shadow is peeling a pear for Peaches, ultimately enabling her fruit addiction. This is a reference to a doodle that I did with my left hand in a sketchbook a while back.
Chapter 9 was where people were really noticing that Shadow is being a good father and stuff. Thing is, he's not new to this, and has always been a good father. Just because Peaches is now a hedgehog instead of a Chao doesn't mean that Shadow is suddenly treating her differently.
You may notice that even after all of the comic has passed, Peaches still has weird sharp shark teeth. This is because her teeth as a Chao are still the ones she uses, and are equal to her baby teeth. Eventually regular hedgehog teeth will grow in.
I'm sure there are a bunch more references and errors that I missed, but uhhhhh, I dunno where. (✿◡‿◡)
FAQ:
Is Tango going to evolve like Peaches did: Yeah, but he's only 3 years old, so not yet. He doesn't evolve until after the story, including the Wattpad continuation, so you'll never really see him being written as a hedgehog.
I thought Shadow lost his phone: He did; that's a new phone.
Here are some screenshots of Sonic's house that I built in Bloxburg because uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh it makes it easier for me to write stories when I know what environment I'm writing.
