when i get further into my divine comedy reread i want to look into medieval european perceptions of shi'ism, because dante places ali in hell, in the subsection for sowers of discord and schismatics. medieval christians, or dante at least (i forget), viewed muhammad as a heretical christian preacher, hence dante damning him to that part of hell. but, as for ali... many commentators assume dante put him there because he was muhammad's son-in-law, an important figure in early islam, and the fourth caliph, but they miss the crucial fact that the sunni-shi'a division began over the question of whether ali was muhammad's rightful heir. dante didn't choose to depict the first caliph, abu bakr, in hell! he chose the fourth!
how much did medieval christians know about the sunni-shi'a split? what were their sources? dante placing ali in hell as a schismatic implies that he believed sunni claims to be more justified.

recently ive has this issue where i read or hear something, my mind sort of blanks, and then i remember a different version of what was said and respond incorrectly. its a weird and specific pattern -- i cant describe it accurately -- and it embarrasses me to talk now because im scared itll happen again. i think its because ive only had 4 hours of sleep at most every single night for 8 days
