My GIF making process!
I’ve been asked many times for a tutorial, but because I get really detailed, I always get overwhelmed by the idea. But I finally decided to buckle down!
Just so you know: I don’t use PSDs in this, and I don’t import layers to frames or anything like that. I like the hard way—at least in gif making, I believe you get higher quality gifs. Join me as I show you how to make gifs by loading videos directly into the Photoshop timeline and my coloring and sharpening techniques.
Tools used:
Mac OS X (only necessary for the first step, and there are other ways around it with a PC)
Adobe Photoshop
YouTube Purchases (any streaming service will work)
Topics covered:
Obtaining the Source Material
Loading the video file into Photoshop
Prepping, Cropping, and Resizing the Media
Adjustment Layers
Sharpening

Tumblr's new update is so shit for artists. Part of the reason I decided to keep working on my current project is because I saw how many lovely people were really enjoying it! Seeing those enthusiastic tags and comments really made my day and gave me the encouragement I needed to decide to keep making stuff! This new update means I have NO idea how many people enjoy what I make or what they're saying about it. It would be like ao3 removing your ability to see hits and kudos. It's a motivation killer pure and simple.
If Tumblr gives a shit about the artists that MAKE this website (drawing, edits, gifs, writing) they will change it back. I doubt they will change it back.
I know a lot of people wont know what to say for sending feedback, and I'm usually terrible as well. But i put together a response using some of the stuff I'd been seeing going around, please feel free to add more but here's what i sent to support in the feedback area! :
Re: The New Reblog Chain Update
Please reconsider this update. I truly believe it would hinder the use and enjoyment of this site for, just some, of the following reasons:
- it would take credit away from artist who are posting their work. Their art, writing, gifs, and any other creations people make and share. There are already enough issues with theft of creations, this will just make that worse.
- it also cuts off those creators from the feedback they're receiving, by giving that feedback to the person who reblogged it, not the person who created it. The artists/creators then have to go digging through reblogs to see what people are saying, and how people are feeling about their art. Not to mention people's responses to just personal posts or general posts not being seen.
- it hinders the sense of community, by splitting notes, cutting communication, conversations and responses.
- it kills collaborative posting that makes tumblr completely different from other media platforms. A very large reason so many people love it here.
And last but not least,
- it will make it harder for those experiencing harassment, to track down where, how, and from whom that harassment is coming from. Meaning they can't even use the other basic functions of the site, like blocking, to protect themselves in their own spaces.
I'm sure there are other reasons to consider. But please, head the wants of your users and do not roll out, or keep, this update.
Since some of you don't seem to understand how this 'new notes' thing works, I'll break it down:
I'm the OP. I'm making this post. If you like, comment, reblog (without comment) on this post, then I'm the one who will see all those notes in my activity page.
However...
If you reblog (with comment), I will get a notification that you did that, but any likes/comments/reblogs (without comment) you get on that reblog will only be shown to you. As OP I won't see them.
If someone adds a reblog (with comment) to your reblog...as OP I won't see that. I won't see any of those notes in my activity page.
Basically, if someone with a large following makes a comment, then they will get all the notes and OP will see nothing. If OP has said something silly because they're, y'know, 21 and it happens, and then someone reblogs it onto the dash of someone with a large following who then dunks on them for fun? OP doesn't see it, doesn't get notes for it, but they're gonna get the harrassment for it in their inbox.
If I, someone with a 5 digit follower count, reblog something to correct misinformation on Ancient Egypt, then OP will never see it unless it was on the original post, but I will continue to get notes on that post even though it's not my post. If I reblog fanart, or just art in general, with a comment like 'Oh this is so lovely!' then OP will not see any of the notes from people reblogging it from me. They'll only see my reblog. So it's possible for an art post by someone else to have 200 notes for them, but 9000 for someone who reblogs it with a comment, and the OP artist will have no idea it's been seen by that many people.
It's killing blow to the community we've built here, by someone higher up who doesn't understand that being able to see all the comments and reblogs is what makes this site the place I keep coming back to.
That's what sucks.
I encourage people to go to tumblr's support page, select contact support, and then in the dropdown menu select 'Feedback' and leave polite and constructive feedback (for those of you who enjoy 'emails worded politely but are a strong 'are you an idiot?', try that way of wording it). They're more likely to listen to you if you're not an asshole about it. I've already gone and done this, and I hope others will too.
