In honor of one of the most loathed holidays of the year, I have selected two movies that show the challenges and imperfections of love. Secretary (2002; dir. Steven Shainberg) and Phantom Thread (2017; dir. Paul Thomas Anderson) are relationship studies that explore the complexities of love, desire, and fulfillment, and feature two strong-willed women submitting to the demands of difficult men, who in doing so, get exactly what they want.
