RIVERSSSOUNDS invites you to navigate the rivers of Europe via the microphones of sound artists. By using digital tools and artistic imagination, RIVERSSSOUNDS is a virtual portal for connecting the physical realities of different cities through sound. A river is a constant flow. It crosses borders yet remains a steady contour on a map, even as borders change. A river is a part of the fabric of cities, generating specific industries, recreational activities, and cultural identities. Nevertheless, a river itself is not belonging. Rather, it runs across the land, constantly reminding us of how much we share in spite of borders. RIVERSSSOUNDS will unite sound artists working with soundscapes and field recording. Each month the platform will host up to three online residents from different European countries that are based in cities with a river. The residents will collaborate to create a sound works reflecting the identity of the river in their cities. In addition, each resident will hold an artist talk, contribute to the sound library with field recordings of their river and a soundwalk. Final artworks will be presented each month online. For the first edition, the platform will host 16 monthly residencies from November 2020 until June 2021. The current call is open for December 2020 and January 2021 residencies. What we propose One month online residency for sound artists who work in geographical Europe. The selected artists will receive a fee of 15 000 UAH (incl. tax). Results of a residency The selected artists are invited to create sound works that will be hosted by the online platform riversssounds.org. The sound work must use field recordings and have a strong site-specific reference to a European river. The sound work will be composed for an interactive dispositive of the online platform to offer a creative listening experience to the online audience. In addition to the composing process, during the residency the artists are invited to prepare a recorded soundwalk, to contribute to the sound library with field recordings of their river, to give an online artist talk and an interview for the platform. We welcome to apply sound artists who are based in geographical Europe at the moment of the residency and have: - a strong interest in working with a river of their city/town/village; - experience in soundscape compositions and field recording; - experience in digital art; - an interest in experimenting with forms of art expression available in online environment; - awareness about acoustic ecology; - a desire to collaborate inside an international project; - a sufficient level of English language; - good time-management and online communication skills.
