What do you think of tumblr's attitude towards anxiety disorders and depression?

Gross.

Since tumblr is big on mollycoddling and protecting people from the realms outside of the internet it’s not surprising that this is a shitty place for any kind of recovery. Here it’s all about clinging onto your problems and using them as an excuse to be a shitty person, and to feel like you belong with these deep and tortured souls you have go all “Keeping up with the Joneses” and fabricate how severe your problems are, if they actually exist. Presumably because the main age groups on tumblr are big on self pitying and making everything into a pissing contest anyway, you can’t expect them to not make everything about terrible the world is for them. It’s all about having labels to cover up how mundane and normal you are, PTSD and gender identities being the current trends.

Also the fact that people seem to forget that anxiety is a perfectly normal feeling, as is being shy and introverted, so if you get anxious about giving a big presentation in front of a crowd then congrats you have a serious anxiety disorder now and can’t possibly do anything that’s remotely anxiety inducing because you’re a poor, fragile snowflake.

I know that’s a bit harsh and you could easily turn round and say I am doing all the above as well and I’m putting other people’s problems down to validate my own, but after being so ashamed of my agoraphobia and the things it’s caused in my life it’s incredibly aggravating to see people use these truly devastating issues as flavour text. Not that I’m saying everyone should be ashamed of it either as people cope in different ways, but it’s like a gut instinct where you just know when something’s off and you can feel your eyes rolling back into your head. Usually because they have a huge list of abbreviated mental illnesses with “atypical” sprinkled in there and irrelevant phobias in their blog description, and say that calling someone a shut-in and telling people to go outside is, like, super triggering, and like, so ableist, omg…

This is why I get upset with the vast majority of tumblr users that claim to have anxiety or panic disorders. It's become trendy and edgy and an excuse for being an asshole or snowflake. No effort is put into actual recovery/therapy because it's a convenient excuse.

I worked damned hard to be able to take public transport or go to a mall at all. Yes, I still have bad days, but it's an ongoing process. I still can't go to concerts or clubs anymore and have lost a lot of things I used to find enjoyable. I know too many people that use the excuse of anxiety to avoid anything they don't want, yet have absolutely no problems if it's something they want.

It feels like a complete slap in the face.

So, a nail polish that detects roofies is "promoting rape culture". The "logic" being that instead of situational awareness and a tool to prevent drugging, we should instead expect that the very type of scum that would drug a woman's drink simply be told rape is wrong. Yes, I'm sure the problem is that he is unaware of right/wrong in this situation and just needs a firm talking to. By this same odd sense of "logic" car alarms and GPS is a bad idea because it encourage theft. Fire alarms? That encourages arson! Defensive driving and paying attention? Drunk driving culture!!! Yes, rape is a heinous act of violence and control and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. However, demeaning the tools to help prevent it is not the answer.

Gay marriage

So, can someone explain to me why they are opposed to gay marriage? No, seriously, I'm curious. This seems like something that would have fuck all impact on anyone else's life other than the two getting married, so why the venomous opposition? I know two of the basic arguments that I hear, and they're pretty ridiculous. 1) Protecting the sanctity of marriage: two dudes/chicks getting married had nothing to do with the sanctity of *your* marriage. Quickie Vegas marriages and subsequent divorces are perfectly legal and they seem to be considered fine. And frankly, when the person that is on their third marriage starts preaching the sanctity of their marriage vows? I just tune them out as hypocritical. 2) It's against the Bible - so are a lot of other things that most of the people protesting seem fine with. Seriously, check out Leviticus sometime. The Bible seems more opposed to me wearing a poly blend t-shirt while eating that rare steak and planning crop rotations than the two guys next to me that have been together for five years. So, really, what is it about gay marriage that gets people upset?
