me at 3 am: okay so in the 2004 animated classic “barbie as the princess and the pauper,” one understated yet brilliant thing is how anneliese and erika’s character arcs meet in the middle. at the start of the movie, erika is actively working to get herself out of her situation and is only depending on herself, while anneliese is discontent with her lot but going along with it because she feels she has no other choice. however, after anneliese gets kidnapped, she becomes much more proactive and saves herself a number of times. meanwhile, while she remains independent and strong, erika also works with julian to protect the kingdom, and has to get help from dominick. this all culminates in the ending, where anneliese gets herself out of her arranged marriage and saves the kingdom from bankruptcy, while erika is released from her debt because anneliese pays it off. anneliese has to learn to be an active player in her own destiny, while erika has to learn to get help from people that care about her. neither girl is completely dependent or completely without support by the story’s end, and they both find a nice balance–
