Ariadne Lalonde
Today is storytime, so stay a while and listen. Yes, I promise this is relevant. Comfy? Good.
Today's story is about Kanaya Maryam.
Wait no.
Today's story is about Theseus and the Minotaur.
Once upon a time, in ancient Greece, Prince Theseus of Athens was one of fourteen youths picked to be shipped to the isle of Crete and fed to the Minotaur, a horrible beast that yeah okay you all should know what the fuck a minotaur is. It's a dude with the head of a bull that eats people and lives in a maze. That's what was pretty much going to happen to these Athenian youths: they get to Crete, they're thrown into the labyrinth, and the Minotaur hunts them down and eats them.
Theseus decided way back when he signed up to get eaten that he's going to fight the Minotaur and stop its Athenian-munching ways. He's got no idea how to go about this, however, until he meets the princess of Crete, Ariadne. Not only is Princess Ariadne a total babe, she's got brains, too. She gives Theseus a sword to kill the Minotaur with, and a ball of thread that he can use to navigate the labyrinth. Theseus then ties one end of the thread to the entrance of the labyrinth, and proceeds to take his sword, kill the Minotaur, and then successfully navigate his way out (in some versions of the tale, taking the other thirteen Athenians out of the labyrinth with him). Then Theseus sweeps Ariadne off her feet (yes romantically), and they sail away together (again, some versions have all the other Athenians in tow).
What the grubhumping FUCK does this have to do with Homestuck, you ask? First, humping grubs is gross, don't do it. Second, Rose's godtier echeladder has everything to do with it. Her current rung is, in fact, Ariadne's Threadspinner. With that in mind, let's just change some names around, and then look at the story againâŠ.
Once upon a time, there was a dashing (prince/jade blood) named (Theseus/Kanaya Maryam) who was determined to navigate (a labyrinth/SBURB) and kill (the Minotaur/the Black King), but didn't know how (he/she) was going to do it. That is, until (he/she) gets a (ball of string/GameFAQs walkthrough that was cast into the Furthest Ring) from the (princess of Crete/Seer of Light), (Ariadne/Rose Lalonde). Armed with the means to navigate the (literal/metaphorical) labyrinth, (Theseus/Kanaya) defeats (the Minotaur/the Black King) and then flees (Crete/the vicinity of the Green Sun) with (Ariadne/Rose) and the surviving (Athenians/trolls). Having successfully escaped with their lives, (Theseus/Kanaya) and (Ariadne/Rose) proceeded to make kissy faces at each other.
Holy bulgechafing fucknuggets, the story IS relevant, you say! Well, I told you so.
But wait. There's more to the story.
You see, after a few rounds of kissy-faces, Theseus leaves Ariadne behind on an island on the way back, sailing off without her. The justifications for this vary depending on the version of the myth (Theseus was a hero, people didn't want him to look bad!), but in all versions, she's left behind and doesn't get to go back to Athens with Theseus. Ariadne is then found wallowing in her despair by none other than the god Dionysus. Dionysus and Ariadne make kissy faces and then get married.
This is where things get interesting. Not only does this not bode well for Rosemary, but Dionysus is the god of wine.
Uh oh.
However, this is also the part where the myth kind of starts to fall apart on us. Rose's alcohol addiction is pretty clearly a Bad Thing, and she knows it, so I don't think she's going to marry booze in any way, shape, or form. Yes, alcohol is undoubtedly playing a role in the Rosemary ship sinking, but it's hardly a happily-ever-after.
So, if Rose is Ariadne, then who is Dionysus?
Here's where shit gets serious and I break out the Google-Fu to see what Dionysus was associated with other than getting shitfaced.
Here's the bullet list:
Also a god of fertility and harvest, as well as ritual madness and ecstacy, with some associations to freedom, and patron of the theatre. And yes, a few orgies. And rebirth after death, oddly enough.
Dionysus was kind of bipolar; one moment he would bring joy to all around him, the next he would do an acrobatic fucking pirouette off the handle and fly into untinking rage. Allegedly, this reflects the nature of wine: a good thing for chillaxing in moderation, but just asking for disaster if overused.
Many of his cults believed he arrived from some foreign region, and this "arriving outsider-god" thing was important to them.
The youngest of the Olympian gods, and also the only one with a mortal mother. Dionysus' mortal mother, Semele, was killed by Hera (well, indirectly) before Dionysus was born. Zeus then took the infant and stuffed him in his thigh, and carried the infant to term. So uh, yay for ancient Greeks inventing mpreg?
Epithets include Adoneus ("ruler"), Briseus ("he who prevails"), Bromios ("Roaring" similar to wind or thunder), Eleutherios ("the liberator"), Lyaeus ("he who unties/releases from care and anxiety"), Pseudanor ("false man"), and "twice-born", the last epithet in reference to his weird birth.
One time, the city of Thebes refused to worship him, so he turned all the women of the town into new recruits for his Maenads (crazy cultist chicks that eat raw animal flesh and dance a lot), and then the new Maenads kill the local king.
Generally, looking down Wikipedia, there are several stories about Dionysus screwing over people who have either slighted him somehow (like trying to sell him into slavery) or just refused to worship him (which I guess was a big deal for the Greeks because Dionysus lived on Olympus?)
Another time, his tutor wandered off drunk, but was taken in by King Midas and treated hospitably until Dionysus could come pick the old man up. In exchange, Dionysus offered a choice of reward, and Midas asked for everything he touched to be turned to gold. After the whole "Midas Touch" debacle, there's at least one version of the myth where Dionysus tells Midas how to get rid of the golden touch.
Actually went down into the Underworld to get his mortal mother out. Some shepherd dude helped him get down there, and in exchange asked to be Dionysus' lover, except he then died before Dionysus could make good on that. So Dionysus buried the guy with a wooden dildo. Classy.
He went to the Underworld at least two other times, to get at least two other people out. One was a great playwright, and the other was...ARIADNE??
HOLD THE FUCKING PHONE.
ARIADNE DIES.
Thus, Rose's chance of kicking the buâŠerâŠof dying have just gone up a zillionfold.
The good news is, her chances of being resurrected have ALSO gone up a zillionfold. And while I could spin my wheels all day about ways to resurrect players (I already did, actually), we can be 99.9% sure that whoever Dionysus turns out to be will have a big role in bringing back our Ariadne.
So, who IS Dionysus? We never answered that.
I have no idea!
âŠOkay, that is a lie, I DO have an idea. I also have no way of telling how tightly my shipping goggles are screwed on. I'll share if people are really interested, though. I GUESS.
