Alfeaux looked behind his shoulder to make sure Rurula wasn’t listening, then turned back to his guest with a sullen expression. 

“It’s….n-not a ‘gift’. D-Definitely not. It’s a…a d-disease. Or a c-curse…or something. It makes me…b-break things…and s-sometimes…p-people, too…” He sighed wearily. Having to recall all of the painful memories his affliction caused him nearly drove him to tears. “I-I’m a p-public nuisance, at best. A p-potential threat.” Though he already knew the answer, he thought to ask anyway. “P-Perhaps you would know of m-my….condition. You’ve t-traveled a lot, h-haven’t you? Please, if you d-do know…I would hear it.” 

With her typical bad timing, Rurula returned, carrying a tray of steaming mugs. Though they lacked any sort of ornamentation, the blend of tea (picked by Alfeaux, of course) they held was pleasantly aromatic. As she set the tray down, she noticed Alfeaux’s downcast expression, and turned to give Sylveret a stern look.

“Oi, you ‘aven’t done somethin’ to upset him now, have ye? He’s a sensitive sort, he is.” She had to climb onto the chair Alfeaux was sitting in to pat him on the head, to which he gave a small smile.

“N-No Mamá, of c-course he isn’t…n-now please s-stop, you’re embarrassing me…”

It’s clear that Aulfeaux is immensely bothered by his own strength, and yet, Sylveret can’t help but think he’s overreacting. Still, he should keep his composure at all times.

As soon as Sylveret was about to give Aulfeaux his reply, the Lalafellin woman returned. Her accusation made Sylveret give her a thin smile.

“I’m sure your son is perfectly capable of defending himself if I ever attempt to harm him in any way.” Slowly, he turned back to Aulfeaux.

“I’m afraid I might be unable to help you.” His words are kept vague on purpose - he has a feeling the other man doesn’t want to discuss his predicament when his mother is around, which is understandable, given the woman’s protective personality. 

“Regardless, I will keep your words in mind. Should I ever run into something that might be useful to you, I shall contact you.” 

Not that Sylveret was particularly interested in being helpful to his new acquaintance. That was just the simplest way to keep an eye on him; it was an interesting man with very interesting capabilities, after all.

“N-No, no need to help, I’m q-quite alright…!” Alfeaux called, partially muffled by his face being pressed against the statue. After much prodding this way and that by Rurula, they arrived at their destination. The library, while not grand by any means, was lavishly adorned by flowers and plants in a rainbow of hues. They were Alfeaux’s ‘pets’, in lieu of his ability to keep a more…animated menagerie.

Alfeaux then, completely unceremoniously, dropped the statue with an earth-shaking ‘thud’. Dusting off his hands, he gave his mother a pleased grin, to which she laughed.

“Aye, there’s a good lad! Now come in, come in! Why don’t you and yer friend here siddown an ‘ave a nice cup o’ tea, eh?” Rurula didn’t give either of them a chance to respond, as she was already pushing Alfeaux through the door and gesturing to Sylveret as she spoke. 

“B-But Mamá…I’m s-supposed to…Oh d-dear…I-I apologize…” He turned to plead with Sylveret, whom who genuinely felt sorry for. Over the years, Alfeaux had learned that Rurula was impossible to reason with once she had decided on something.

It would seem that the Elezen was being honest about not needing help - while he seemed uncomfortable carrying the statue, he didn’t seem troubled. Quite impressive, Sylveret thinks to himself. 

The library is very much like Sylveret imagined - smaller than the simplest Ishgardian libraries, and full of plants, like everywhere else in Gridania. He’s not particularly fond of flowers, but it’s visible that whoever takes care of them is doing a good job, which Sylveret can respect, even if the vivid colors are not to his taste.

Alfeaux seems even more troubled when his mother suggests they both stay for tea. His nervous gaze makes Sylveret’s lips curl in slight amusement.

“It should be fine. I have some time to spare.” His eyes wander to the stone statue, then back to Alfeaux after a short while. “…You’re quite strong, for a librarian.”

Any underlying tone Sylveret may have intended completely flew over Alfeaux’s head. “A-Are you sure…? M-Mamá can be a b-bit…overwhelming…” He tried to utter that last statement quietly, but to no avail. 

“Oi, an’ what’s that supposed to mean, eh?!” Rurula gave her Duskwight son a playful shove, to which he tottered exaggeratedly. “Now then. I’ll set the kettle, you go an’ make sure our guest’s comfortable!” Before leaving, however, she made sure to cast an almost imperceptible suspicious glance at Sylveret. 

“Ah…y-yes, of course.” Alfeaux watched Rurula leave the room, then turned to their impromptu guest. 

“….It’s….n-not something I’m t-terribly happy with, I can assure you.” His expression became weary. 

“I-I…I would g-give anything to…t-to not be…like this. ‘Strong’, th-that is.”

For a short while, Sylveret watches the woman and her son interact. It’s quite surprising how he allows himself to be hit in such a way - could he have bad reflects? Was he simply indulging his mother? ...Maybe he was overthinking it.

If only for a moment, Sylveret feels as if someone’s looking at him; he turns to the Lalafellin woman, but she’s already gone. It could’ve been just his mind playing tricks on him. Or maybe it wasn’t.

Alfeaux’s words make him blink in contained surprise.

“Is that so?” Sylveret crosses his legs, trying to find a more comfortable position, or about as comfortable as one can be in a suit of armor. “That’s most curious. Your gift is remarkably rare, and I have no doubt many envy you. Why does it trouble you?”

RISKBREAKERS FIGHT NIGHT ON WEDNESDAY, MAY 25TH!

That’s right: this May 25th will mark the Riskbreakers’ second anniversary!

It means so much to all of us that we’ve been able to share a part of the game with all of you, and to show it, we’ll be hosting a special anniversary event!

On Wednesday, May 25th from 7:00 PM to 11:00 PM EST, the Sandsea will be open to all for a night of sparring!

Clothing is optional but recommended.

Anyone who wishes to join in the sparring in-character will be more than welcome to do so! However, we ask the following:

No fighting to injure! There’s a time and place for that, and this event is not it. Accidental scrapes and bruises are one thing, blood loss and concussions entirely another.

The Riskbreakers do combat roleplays as follows: The one performing the action describes their intended attack, then follows up with a /random roll. If the number is higher than 500, then that action is a hit, with higher numbers meaning more powerful blows; if the number is below 500, then it is a miss, with lower numbers meaning wilder misses. (Handicaps may also be applied, if both parties agree - for instance, someone trying to fight a decorated monk in hand-to-hand combat may have to reach 700 or even 800 on a /random for their attack to count as a hit.) You are more than free to roleplay scripted fights or even use other methods of luck-based combat, so long as both parties mutually agree on the form the roleplay takes.

Be respectful to all fighters. If you experience any problems during the event, please take it up privately with either me or Sylvan Rain.

We will also welcome spectators, or guests in any other form! The bar will be open for the duration of the event. Ashelia Riot may or may not break out the Leá Monde vintage.

For good drinks, good fights, and even better friends… come to the Sandsea on May 25th and celebrate with us!

Final Fantasy XIV || 高地ドラヴァニアの風景

There was something strange about the way this new person spoke… But, as much as Alfeaux thought about it, he couldn’t quite place what it was. This ‘Sylveret’ person was polite, but perhaps…a bit too polite. It made him feel unnerved, but at the same time, he was vastly curious. Alfeaux cocked his head, pondering the possibilities.

He hadn’t realized he was being spoken to. “Ah! S-Sorry, I…I g-got a bit lost in thought…” 

Why was he bowing his head? Alfeaux, unsure of what to do, mimicked the gesture. “N-Nice to meet you, S-Sylveret…m-my name…my name is Alfeaux, b-but everyone c-calls me ‘Alfy’…I…I l-live in the library…” As Sylveret’s eyes met his, he immediately looked down at the ground, too nervous to make eye contact. “…Actually, I-I was g-going to an inn to escape Mamá’s cooking-I m-mean…w-what I meant was, I c-can show you t-to the Carline C-Canopy! If th-that’s ok…M-Mother Miounne is a v-very talented cook!” He quickly started to stride in the direction of the Canopy, nearly tripping over himself in his rush.

The other Elezen takes his time to answer him, which would usually bother Sylveret, but he’s such a quaint little one that Sylveret can’t help but feel amused. 

“Very well. Then I shall call you Alfeaux.” He purposefully ignores the man’s nickname - as if he was one for nicknames! Oh, those silly little Gridanians with their funny names. 

“Oh, so you are familiar with the local inn. Wonderful. I will follow your lead.” 

Aulfeaux was surprisingly fast, or, at least, faster than one would expect - he’d make a decent Dragoon, Sylveret muses to himself. Or maybe he wouldn’t. Too nervous. Too hesitant. Dead Dragoons were no good. And it would seem he was one for books rather than lances - he did say something about living in a library… that couldn’t be very healthy. 

After a short while, Sylveret frowns.

“Are we there yet? …Everywhere looks the same in this blasted city.” The last part is muttered to himself.

It had only been…maybe two minutes at the most…Alfeaux wondered why Sylveret seemed to be in such a rush. As he was about to answer his question, however, a very familiar voiced yelled out to him.

“OIIIII-! Alfy! Ah, an’ who’s this then? Friend o’ yers?” Rurula looked up at the two Elezen, grinning. She was guiding, or rather, trying to guide Alfeaux’s chocobo Maxie, who was haphazardly tied to what looked like an enormous stone statue of…something? It was…very abstract. And not very pleasing to the eye. Not Alfeaux’s, at least. 

He smiled at his adoptive mother, trying to mask his distaste for the statue. “Oh, um…th-this is Sylveret, Mamá. He’s n-not from around here, so I-I was showing him t-to the inn…” In that moment, Alfeaux was extremely grateful for Sylveret’s presence for providing a convenient excuse for him to be going to the Carline Canopy. 

“Tourist, eh? Hmm…Well, something like it, at least.” She eyed the newcomer warily. “Anyway, I know yer busy n’ all, but you’ll never believe what that ol’ curmudgeon of an antique dealer was practically just GIVIN’ away! A real beauty, ain’t it? It must be at least three thousand years old!” Her excited bouncing around and pointing was highlighted by her Lalafellin stature.

After a while of blathering on to her ever-patient son, Rurula remembered something. “Oh! Right. The only problem is, I can’t seem to move the blasted thing! And neither can Maxie, poor bird.” She gestured to the red chocobo, who seemed glad he wasn’t being made to attempt to drag the statue…which was clearly far too heavy for him to pull. “Be a dearie would ye, an’ carry this home for me!” Rurula said with exaggerated sweetness.

“Oh, b-but…”  Alfeaux looked to Sylveret, then to Rurula, then back and forth again. “Alright…th-this should only t-take a moment, I’m sorry…!” He looked to Sylveret for a response, then quickly hefted the massive statue, as if it weighed about as much as a sack of popotoes. “I-I can’t see, Mamá…P-Please push me in the r-right way…” With his face smushed into the side of the unwieldy hunk of stone, Alfeaux started tottering forward, being prodded by Rurula toward the library.

Sylveret’s thoughts are interrupted by the arrival of what looks to be like a Lalafellin lady followed by a chicke- chocobo, with a bizarre stone monument of sorts tied to its body. 

As he watches the conversation with an analytical gaze, he learns that the small lady in front of him is, apparently, Alfeaux’s mother. When Sylveret’s own name is mentioned, he turns to the newcomer and bows his head to her, much like he did when he introduced himself to Alfeaux. Being called a ‘tourist’ makes Sylveret purse his lips in quiet indignation, but he simply returns the woman’s gaze with an unreadable expression. Gridanians, he mentally tells himself. Must be patient. Must show fondness for plants.

Regardless, Sylveret doesn’t bother hiding his disgust for the statue the Lalafell seems so proud of; if anything, a pile of rocks would work as a more attractive display. He can’t imagine his own dear mother accepting such a thing in her gardens.

When the woman asks for her son to carry the statue for her, it’s enough to make Sylveret blink slowly and sigh. Was this what others called ‘child abuse’? And why couldn’t she borrow a few servants to- oh, right. Gridanians. Gridania.

Alfeaux turns to him for a moment, as if apologetic for the sudden change of plans, but Sylveret merely gazes at him with his usual cold (and handsome, why not) expression. The other Elezen sounds even more nervous than before, and, while Sylveret isn’t one for compassion, idleness does not suit him.

“Here, let me-” He was about to offer a helping hand to carry the statue, when Alfeaux lifts it by himself.

“...”

...That wasn’t a Gridania thing, Sylveret knew that much.

Then why-

How-

...Why couldn’t he lift massive stone statues?

Life truly was unfair. And that was a dangerous man.
