My Take on Privilege
I am a White Man born to an upper middle class family. It wasn't until an experience I had a few days ago. I was driving around in a random part of New York (I later learned was in the Bronx). I was hungry and found my way to a Burger King. Upon walking in I realized I was in a predominantly black neighbor. I order my food and started eating, pretty standard. I noticed I forgot to get ranch dressing, so I get back in line to get the condiment. I was behind a black gentleman who was doing the same thing I was, getting more ranch. He asked for it and quickly received it. Once it was my turn I requested it and the man at the register told me it would cost 27 cents. Despite feeling a bit slighted I payed for it even though the man in front of me received his for free. I came to a pretty horrifying realization. My skin color cost me an extra 27 cents while others skin colors are costing them their lives. This is white privilege. This is why we need #blacklivesmatter
