In the Brilliant bright light of the sun
We met by the side of the road.
Came together to lighten the load
Four arms can carry more water than two you said.
Walking up the hill
Just a Jack and a Jill.
Looking out at the world around.
Green grass, trees, wild red roses grew at the bottom of the hill.
At the apex of the that hill is a well.
A place to fetch some water.
Looking up at him,
He was the smile reflected on my face.
Just a Jack and a Jill.
As the bucket was pulled out of the well
The sky became dark.
Lighting came crashing down.
Fire was set on the green pasture.
We jumped to avoid the fire.
Down the hill I fell
Tumbling after you.
I reached my hand out to you.
You pulled away from me.
It started to rain.
The rain put the fire out,
But pasture, it was no longer green.
It was black and chard.
Hit my head on the ground.
Could not see straight.
But you,
You stood up
And walked away.
Did you see me?
I’m still here.
Caught in the wild red rose thorny bush.
Right where you left me.
A crumpled mess on the ground.
Blood streams down my face.
In that moment
Recall a time when
It was just a Jill with her Jack.
You spoke a great deal,
but your actions leave me on the floor,
Reaching out to you for help.
You won’t help me.
So I rise up.
I walk again.
Climb back up that hill again.
Alone to fetch a pail of water.
