OOC | Joff & Sysley
OK but Joff will ADORE Sysley like she is the coolest old lady and honestly Joff is like #goals any time she opens her mouth to sass someone like she knows how to live!!!!!!! And Joff loves to snark but honestly who, except like Alex and Dmitrei, aren’t amateur hour compared to Sysley when it comes to sass????? Joff, probably: pls may i study at your knee ive so much to learn ;DDDD
I feel like Sysley would like Joff a lot!!!! Honestly, she def finds the company in the north lacking (at least re: the nobility haha she’d much rather hang with the peasants) and I feel like joff would make things interesting!!!! Anyway, since Joff is from the south and Sysley has lived her entire life in the north, I feel like they probably are just now meeting????? I think she may have gone south once or twice before, but I feel like she was much younger then haha and joff may or may not have even been born
Miserable Souls | Cassius & Sysley
cassiusmontagu:
Cassius had no illusions as to Sysley’s true feelings regarding himself and, frankly, he found it refreshing. If nothing else, they were at least likeminded in this: they detested Cassius Montagu above all living things saving, perhaps, Her Grace the Queen. Cassius was an easy man to hate. Even when he’d been at his best, his friends were few, and perhaps that was part of why he had been so amazed and beguiled by Rowena’s professions of love: he’d not thought anyone would ever look at him that way.
They’d been right not to.
He walked slowly, watching his steps carefully amidst the snow. Like Rowena, it was beautiful. Beautiful and treacherous and cold. He enjoyed the soft crunch beneath his feet as he tread over it.
The sound of Sysley’s voice disturbed his reverie and Cassius stopped to regard her, gravely. “Hmm,” he hummed, almost a laugh. Will, he thought, sorrowfully. Will DeGrey might have said something like that.
“Not long,” he assured her. “I’m here only to convey the congratulations of Her Grace the Queen upon the majority of your nephew.” In fact, that was not his motive, it was his excuse. He was there to ensure the easy transition of the Fontaines. Specifically, Guinevere Fontaine. Given that they were now to live where once Jon Valles had dwelt, Cassius could not imagine it was a place fit for anything other than torture, rape, and death and he meant to ensure that she had at least the basic necessities of life.
“How does the North take to the shift in governance?” he inquired, narrowing his eyes. He’d met the lad enough to know that his were…not the most capable hands into which the fate of the North could fall. But then, he’d also known Jon Valles. They were not the worst, either. Lucian Moran, himself, had hardly been a kind and virtuous leader, but at least he’d been a capable one. No one yet knew what Rowlin might prove to be.
"What a pity,” She said, “I’m sure we shall be just as sorry to see you go as you shall be to leave us.” Which is to say, that she was certain that the North would be just as happy to see him leave them as he would be to return to the East. Go back to your Queen’s side.
“Had you been able to stay for a fortnight, you would be able to stay for the Remembrance Day celebrations. I suppose there’s not much helping that. I’m sure the Queen has much and more for you to do.”
She tilted her head, “Have you ever been in the North during Remembrance Day, Montagu?” She didn’t feel as though he would be a welcome addition to any celebration (he seemed the sort that would dampen spirits, instead of liven them). But she imagined that, perhaps, such an occasion as this might do him good. He might, at least, contemplate the question: would the people risk their own lives to save his and his queen, as the Northerners had once done for their own lord?
These thoughts and his own questions led her to think of her nephew (who was far from being so beloved by his people as his ancestors once had been). “He is young,” She said, “And he has much and more to learn. His uncle sorely neglected his education.” This was hardly an excuse for his behavior. He was cruel and spoiled, in addition to his ignorance. Still, she never passed up an opportunity to place the blame upon Lucian Moran’s head.
“The people do not love him.” She said, shortly. “And they would, I’m sure, prefer that Moran kept his seat. I cannot say that I blame them.” As much as she disagreed with Lucian, he was a far better ruler than Rowlin. “But what does any of that matter? The seat is his because it was his father’s before him. Such is the way of things.”
ooc | Sysley & Lena
Sysley would freakin’ love Lena so!!! much!!!!!!!!!! I feel like she probably reminds her a little of how she was, when she was younger tbh <3 Anyway, she thinks she’s the greatest and she’s like “if ur dad ever kicks u out for not finding urselff a husband, you can come and live with me” basically. also she thinks she’s the greatest friend alia could have. she has suPER high standards for what that entails and lena meets all of them <3
Goodbye, the Queen of Thorns Sass. [part 1]
Miserable Souls | Cassius & Sysley
She’d done something no mother should ever do: she had to bury her children. And he had made her do it.
The memories of her lost sons was never far from her mind, but they were impossible to escape whenever she was in the presence of Cassius Montagu. He’d murdered them all. And for what? She wondered. What had he gained from it? Surely not happiness. He was a miserable soul: his smiles (rare as they were) never reached his cold eyes. She took some small pleasures in that. She hoped he never felt warmth or happiness again. And if he did, she wanted it taken from him.
But she knew she must tread carefully when she was around him. Her age and station would only protect her so much. Had she not had a beloved niece to look after, she might have said and done more. She’d once even considered killing him herself. All it would take would be a drop of a potion in his tea.
Kill the rider; kill the dragon.
She’d been so very close once, but she could not leave Alia to live amongst the monsters on her own. She knew she would eventually be found out and sentenced to die, horribly, by the Queen. So, until Alia was settled and happy, Sysley would not considering harming a hair on his miserable head.
“My nephew told me you had arrived,” She said, by way of greeting “It is always a pleasure to be in your company.” She added, “The Last Dragon Rider.” She announced, a slight hint of sarcasm in her voice. “And how long are you to grace us with your presence?”
The Queen Of Thorns
ooc | Sysley & Symon
So these two are related!!! Sysley’s dad and Symon’s granddad were bros so they are cousins!
That being said, I’m not sure how well they know each other??? There are sooo many Staffords haha and some of them are up North and some are in the West, and Sysley’s a Northerner and Symon’s a Westerner.
But maybe Symon has come up North before??? Or Sysley has gone down to the east to visit??? I feel like Sysley rolls her eyes at most of her relatives b/c they are such a mess hah, but I can see her really liking Symon and taking an interest in him. :)
ooc | The Fontaines (+ Isabella)
Okay, so Sysley definitely knew Jon and she knows his relatives Jesper and Roderick ... and while Jesper and Roderick are both far and away Jon’s superiors, that’s not saying that much b/c Jon has literally set the bar as low as it can possibly go and so if you are the worst person imaginable, you are on the same level as Jon. Like there’s no going lower ;DDD
Anyway, so that being said, I think she’s probably expecting the Fontaines to be better than Jon but honestly probably on the same level as Jesper/Roderick, haha. Especially b/c I think the only thing she knows about them is how they are related to Jon and that Arthur Arrington is in love with most of them and Cassius Montagu with the rest and like??? that’s not a super swell recommendation in Sysley’s eyes either, haha.
BUT when she does meet them, I think she will be pleasantly surprised and would actually really enjoy their company!!!! I feel like she’d invite them to have tea with her and Alia and Isolde pretty frequently and I think she’d feel awful for them given their situation. I can even see her offering them Icemark to stay if they are ever kicked out of Yilankale by Jesper/the Beaumonts. I mean Icemark is even further up North and like there’s not much there but its in wayyyy better condition than Yilankale. Unfortunately, the only downside to that is that when Sysley dies, Icemark goes to Remon Vipont and his wife so that offer isn’t really that helpful long term but it still stands for now. :)
SYSLEY DU FEY (NÉE STAFFORD) / dianna rigg
♦ Age: (71) ♦ Relationships: Rowlin Stafford (nephew), Alia Stafford, Alvicia Vipont, Jacquetta Osmunt, Joanette Stafford (nieces), Beatrix Stafford, Symon Stafford, Lysander Stafford, Malcumus Stafford, Gawyn Stafford (cousins) ♦ Description: Sysley du Fey was the elder sister of Rowlin’s father. She moved to the northern coast when she was married and lived there happily with her husband and her three sons (all of whom were dragon riders). When the purge occurred fifteen years ago, over, all of them were killed by Cassius Montagu. She lived alone since then, but has recently returned to her childhood home for a visit. Her time here was supposed to be temporary, but in truth, she doesn’t have any plans to ever go back. She’s needed here: by her nephew’s side. She has seen the sort of man he’s turned out to be, thanks to Lucian Moran, and she means to do whatever she can to influence him from further harming the North. Sysley always speaks her mind and has come dangerously close to upsetting her nephew past the point of no return. She is always kind to everyone who she feels deserves it, and tries to help those in need. When she hears whispers of rebellion, she’s only too happy to help. TAKEN BY LIZZY.
You’ll get your apology when I get Loras
OOC | Rochilda & Sysley
“The One God blessed your womb with dragon riders for offspring. Together, we can avenge the abomination of their murders.”
Sysley is like “you mean the 12 gods” but otherwise that sounds like a plan to me. ;DDD But no, I feel like Sysley def believes in the gods and in turn, also the demon god, but hell no she’s not praying to him b/c he’s literally an evil demon like ??? why are you following him????? he’s literally called the demon god????
OOC | Jesper & Sysley
Ngl, Jesper has all the respect in the world for Sysley…which probs makes her the only person ever in the world to earn his respect ;DDD
alskdfjlaj omg that is everything tbh. Meanwhile Sysley is just like: *raises eyebrows* control your son.

ooc | Sysley & Cassius
CASSIUS KILLED ALL OF THEM NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO “Just when we thought Lucian’s dinner parties couldn’t get any more…dynamic.”
I CHOKED Lucian is staring DAGGERS at her this whole time like the deaths stares are BEYOND real. What’s funny is, I think Cassius would be far more accepting of it. I think he bottles it up so much inside some times it’s nice to acknowledge that it ~happened. I mean, cue hardcore brooding notwithstanding bc I mean ~Cassius~ but still. He’s not naturally a people kinda person hahahaha but I think he’d be pr open about it. Like, he doesn’t really condemn the fallen riders. He’s more like, “They fought bravely.” Like, he wouldn’t say too much, necessarily, but I think he at least tries to walk the thin line of being respectful to the memory of those he killed so far as is possible. Idk, he’s weird hahahahaha but esp bc she’s a mom? Of three!
Like, with Romayne, for example, he wasn’t really impacted but I feel like Cassius kind of feels he owes it to her to look her in the eye and tell her about her sons and explain to her that, while they may not have known of the plot, they still sided with those who did, when it came down to it and use this as a springboard to speak of their valor and loyalty and all those fine traits he so prematurely snuffed out. And I think he’d be honest, if pressed, that while he did not want to kill any of them, he did what he felt he had to, at the time and I can see where this might just make things worse from her perspective but Cassius is trying to be respectful in his own way and yeah
Tbh he wouldn’t mind her saying borderline treaonous things (tho Lucian ABSOLUTELY DOES) as long as she doesn’t tell him she’s gonna act on it. Tbqh, he doesn’t even mind her plotting it, as long as she doesn’t bring it to his attention. Bc once he knows about treason, he has to act on it, but if it’s just hinted at, he can pretend he didn’t notice????? Hahahaha he’s so weird idek But a part of him would feel satisfaction watching Rowena torn off her throne, even though it would almost certainly mean his own horrible death as well
LUCIAN MORAN’S dinNER PARTIES continue to get better and better like aldjfalfjaldfkj <3333 (favs tbh)
So I DO think that Sysley would appreciate (on some small level??) that he’s all “they fought bravely” etc. etc. and isn’t like “THEY WERE ALL EVIL HORRIBLE PEOPLE” still at the same time, that almost makes it worse??? Like if he truly believed to this day that he did the right thing, that would make him a serious idiot but she’s def seen good people believe everything Rowena says (~cough~Lysander~cough~) Basically, I think that Sysley will be able to tell enough that there’s some regret, but he’s STILL the Queen’s right hand and he’s still following her orders and I think that she’ll think he’s actually worse than Rowena in a lot of ways.
Also if he ever told her that, she’d just be like “my sons were reasonable men.” and like “yo if you talked to them instead of straight up murdering them, i’m sure they would help you. i’m sure the queen had some proof when she came to you and surely you would have been able to pass it on to them?!?!!”
yeahhh at this point she def WANTS to act on it but there’s not a whole lot she can do. (i do think she’ll be more careful when the resistance comes to town obviously, but for now she just likes making cassius feel guilty and lucian feel uncomfortable -- like she doesn’t have much else to live for ;DDD jk jk -- but still both of those things are v rewarding for her haha) But yeah she would def only ever hint at it and never say anything outright.
A Good Judge of Character | Sysley & Jyne
The Northern summers were always short, but as Sysley grew older the faster they seemed to fly by. Many things had changed over her long life, but she still enjoyed being outside the stuffy castle walls as often as she could. The brutal winters that the North suffered would keep her inside for days, weeks, even months.
Even as an old woman, she would not be content with the slow, routine walk about the courtyard as the other women did to take the air and get their exercise. Today, she went to the stables. She used to be a rider herself, once, but no longer. She still had a fondness for them and, weather permitting, often had an apple or even a sugar cube tucked away in her pockets for them.
Sunlight streamed through the open door of the barn and it was quite warm inside (by Northern standards anyway). The place was quiet and mostly empty, but towards the back there was a redhaired girl brushing out the mane of a strong black stallion.
“You have a way with him,” She commented, “I rather like this one, myself. Last year he kicked my nephew into the snow when he tried to mount him,” She chuckled to herself as the memory came flickering back. It was one of her few cherished memories involving Rowlin. It was a lucky thing for the horse that Rowlin had been determined to tame him and didn’t demand that it be killed on the spot.
And it was luckier still that he had forgotten about taming the horse altogether. A quick, clean death would have been preferable than that.
“This horse seems to be a rather good judge of character.”
