System Restore: Summary of the End

Salutations, friends! As of now, it’s been… well over four years since the story’s last update.

To make a long story short, I haven’t been able to write much of anything at all in that timeframe, between other commitments and projects, life stress, and the special kind of exhaustion that comes from working a 9 to 5 job. On top of that, System Restore has proven a very tricky story to wrap up. Although I’ve always known how it’ll end, many of the hanging plot threads have gotten tangled or moved around over time, and there are too many I’ve agonized over, or even been scared of, on the other of months and years.

Well NOT ANYMORE. A few months ago, in response to questions about updates, I made a commitment – by the end of 2021/start of 2022, I was going to create and publish a summary of the end of the story, ahead of its completion – and I’m still committed to complete it! This is both a way for me to collect my own thoughts in a finalized form AND the end of a long time waiting for the people who have supported me so far, whether you’ve just found the thing or you’ve been with it from the start.

I’ve created this based on my own notes about the remaining chapters, as well as my own recent reread of the story and feedback from friends and confidants. Another part of the reason I’m sharing this now is that I’d like your feedback, too, to make this ending as strong and as satisfying as is possible at this point.

If you’d rather not read this and wait for the rest of the story, I totally get it! However, if you do, I hope you enjoy – and provide your feedback, which I will consider as I move ahead. Update!

Hi everyone! This is more of a quick note.

Earlier, I had committed to writing and posting a summary of the end of System Restore before the end of 2021. This is for multiple reasons. It’s been over eight years now since I started the story, and over four since the last update - a time I’ve spent stuck, indecisive, and crushed under other obligations and the weight of the world - something that’s been improving as of late. I know you all have been waiting for a long time, and I want to share the ending with you all as much as you want to read it.

This, I felt, was the quickest way to do it ahead of actually writing out the ending in full, which I fully intend to do. Not only that, but it allows you all a chance to give feedback - something I think I want ahead of said ending, especially given the twists and turns the story has taken already.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I wrote up said summary largely off the dome. I’m pretty happy with it and I think I’ve untangled many of the knots, but before I gave it that final polish I did want to reread the story in full - something I haven’t done in a while - so I don’t forget anything crucial and so I know what I need to address.

This... ended up being a bit more of a task than I had anticipated! Currently I am in the The Future Foundation section. I don’t think I’ll be able to make it by midnight but I am sure to have it ready before my winter break from work ends, that being on January 4th. I just knew this was fast approaching and wanted to both make a wider announcement about this and clarify why a summary hadn’t dropped yet. Thank you all so much, and Happy New Year! <3

if you’re still looking for tiny things to fix: at one point real!byakuya is described as having a lighter shade of hair than imposter!byakuya. when comparing talksprites though, imposter has the lighter color. i forget which chapter, but i think it was when hajime walked in on real!byakuya talking with chiaki.

Heyo. Just wanted to drop by and hoping your doing well! I do have a question tho (idk if its already been asked) what literature inspired your style of writing if u have any at all! Best wishes!

Hello! First of all, thank you very much - I am doing well! It's been... a tough and busy few years, but I'm still going strong, I'd say.

I have actually never been asked this before, oh goodness. The short answer is I learn something new from just about every book i read, whether it's what to do or what to super not do. But I think my biggest style influences are Jasper Fforde, Neil Gaiman, and Daphne du Maurier, with an undercurrent of the Harry Potter i read as a kid. I would also be remiss if i didnt mention how Homestuck utilized spectacle and broke traditions of form.

I'm sure there's many more that arent coming to me now. But i hope this helps!

Control is not quite the right word. Heavily influenced to the point where Hinata thought he was making the decisions himself, though? Absolutely.

Curious, if given the time. Would you ever want to go back and rewrite system restore? As constantly mention errors and shifts in tone you're unhappy with now

Hello! I think my main focus would be finishing it - with some rewrites of parts that don't fit with how I would want to finish it now. I do want to do so, but given how long it's been (eight years!!!) I am strongly, strongly considering publishing a summary of how it will end first, just for those of yall who have waited. ;w;

So I just began reading this like 4 days ago and I'm only on Chapter 17 but I'm really glad you're still okay and you replied to another ask today and it's the first reply since like 2 years and don't even get me started on the fanfiction and since I'm only halfway through it I can't say anything about it's hiatus but it has been an excellent read so far

Just finished chapter 30 of System Restore. I don't know if you'll finish it, that's your own business, but I think what you wrote was pretty damn good! It even inspired the person who wrote I'd Trade My Life for Yours. Anyway, I'm curious, are you planning on moving the content on this blog somewhere else in case they delete this blog? I don't know why they would, but you never know.

is sr dead? its been quite a long while since any post or new chapter. i get that you get intense writer's block, so that that might be the case, but this seems like longer than you have gone off the charts before. did something happen to you? are you ok?

I am okay! Thank you very much for checking in. It’s... been a combination of things. One is that I’ve taken on a much more demanding day job which has left me very little opportunity to write at all. 

Two is that I’m in a period where I don’t feel as good about the story and the direction I’ve been taking it in as I used to. That’s a lot, but... I guess I built up this big climactic Thing and I don’t know if I can deliver on it. And that stress is keeping me away. I guess that could be intense writer’s block. 

But rest assured, I am okay! I just need to pull myself back. I’m so sorry for making you worry, and thank you for checking in. This is just the kind of encouragement I needed. :)
