ive seen lots of people say jensen is homophobic and hates destiel... do u believe that's true lol
I'm personally not sure about the homophobic part, like I don't think he is (apparently he has a lesbian aunt who's part of his life? so I'm assuming no), and idk if he hates destiel either? like he has said (at some con) he played dean as a straight male because that's how he viewed dean, but then he's also contributed to a lot of destiel in the show and out of it. and maybe some of it was just appeasing fans during cons and stuff but idk
as a fan of the show I did ship destiel and believed them to be romantic and thought dean was just a super repressed bisexual lmaoaoa but tbh i never actually believed we'd see it go canon (like a destiel kiss) because i just never saw jensen agreeing to kissing another man lmaooooo like he is NOT gay for pay idk
anyway just wanted ur thoughts <3
First off I’ll answer the part of your ask I have personal experience with. I am a lesbian. All of my various siblings support me to various levels and would never call themselves homophobic. I have a sister who goes to Pride “for me <3” lmao. Yet this is all pretty easy shit for anyone who is not violently homophobic. Nothing about who I sleep with affects their personal lives and I imagine having “an aunt” who is a lesbian would be even less so. Their life and your life are separated not only by gender but by age (I am assuming here I have no idea how old she is). Plenty of my brothers are also casually homophobic to people not me lmao. There are different rules for different spheres of influence. Not hate criming a family member means zero in overall homophobia to me.
I don’t know JA personally. All I can go by is what I’ve seen and what he’s done publicly. And I know that unprompted he told the story about wanting to be in a western before Brokeback Mountain came out. There is absolutely no reason to say this other than homophobia. The crux of the “joke” is that he liked cowboys before they got GAY. He was hardly the only man with this opinion but he’s the one who chose to share this anecdote which does make me wonder what else he has said about these topics he doesn’t share if he thought this was appropriate. Again, this was unprompted.
I personally couldn’t give less of a shit about what any actor on spn thinks about their character or the way they “think” they played them. Who gives a fuck. But I do find it fascinating how personally JA has taken queer Dean readings in the past. I also do find it bizarre that Kripke at least pretended to be into On The Road and Kerouac and named Dean after the openly bisexual character in that novel and literally has him cruising guys in the first season (a lot of people miss this but to a queer person it’s very obvious lmao… watch the unedited version of The Benders episode if you don’t believe me. Actually just watch the edited for streaming version and wonder why Dean took a leak for over an hour thus leaving Sam vulnerable to kidnapping lmao). Was JA really this oblivious? I don’t know. It’s lowkey hilarious if he was. A lot of the queer shit from the early show is early 2000s homophobia made hilarious retrospectively but then there are examples like the above that are just weird even within context.
I suppose now I could go into the various cons where he’s said dumb shit and where canonical events (Castiel’s confession TO Dean not even something Dean himself did lmao) were absolutely verboten for years. But saying dumb shit at cons is basically what people go to them for. They live for this shit lmao. There is also a very large contingent of Supernatural fans who act like they have to “protect” JA from any mention of queer Dean which is hilarious. That these same women are the same people paying thousands of US dollars to go to these conventions over. And over. And over. Cannot be overstated. There is a vested interest in keeping them happy and paying customers. Not that I blame them. It’s the perfect grift.
Supernatural (the entity) generally treats their fans like morons. I know we’re on the tumblr side of fandom (god help us all) over here but there is also a very large block of conservatives who loved the show and it’s pro gun, pro life, shoot your way out of trouble, my dick is my car overt messaging lmao. What this means is that they have always played it on both sides. They literally had “Destiel” (as in yes, the ship name) merchandise for sale at Hot Topic with the tagline “wait and see ;)” on it. They always wanted to have it both ways. More money that way. Destiel fans have been conditioned to accept the very barest scraps as validation. If JA doesn’t vomit at the mention of Destiel it’s considered to be stunning and brave. Why they give a fuck about what he thinks is beyond me.
I would typically say that “gay for pay” is a pretty heinous way to describe an actor agreeing to a gay storyline but in this case I acquiesce since I truly do believe this is exactly how JA looks at it. The super fans can babble on and on about how his Days of our Lives character could have been gay!, how he once portrayed a sexless bisexual in a terrible Marilyn Monroe movie on television back in the stone ages, blah blah blah. He’s never going to do anything to ruin his carefully curated (and frankly stupid … to me) persona of a rugged manly man (lmao) who doesn’t even do rom coms let alone gay romance. I don’t understand the tender worship for either JA or JarPad nor do I understand the “personalities” that have been assigned to them by the cultish fandom “Supernatural Family :)”. I remember someone one asked me about JA being in “The Vampire Lestat” and I could barely stop laughing. Luckily for him Kripke will keep him employed for as long as his shit gets green lit and there are a myriad of cop shows for him to act in.
They move in together full time and Ilya notices that Anya acts differently with Shane than she does with him, more quiet and less playful, and he worries that means she doesn’t like Shane or is jealous, so he hires a dog trainer to come over and see if there’s anything they need to do to help
After a while of talking about how Anya acts the trainer says there’s nothing to worry about, Anya likes Shane just fine, it’s just that she sees him as the boss and is acting accordingly
And Ilya is like. But. I’m the one who adopted her? And raised her before Shane got here?? And the trainer is just like yeah well she sees you more like an equal. And Ilya is like WAIT she thinks Shane is in charge of both of us?? And the trainer is just like well do you interact in a way that would make her think that?
Ilya’s life flashes before his eyes as he thinks of all the times Shane has come over with a snack for Ilya and a treat for Anya, or all the times Shane has announced they’re all going for an after dinner walk, or pets Ilya’s hair and tells him he did a good job at practice, or the fact that he uses the same warning tone with Anya when she misbehaves as he does with Ilya when he’s causing problems on purpose
Shane comes home to Ilya with his face in his hands going oh god I’m not Anya’s dad I’m her brother and she thinks we’re both your pets. And Shane just goes. What.
Not that I think all marriages are doomed but when deciding who to marry you should ask yourself “is this someone I’d want to divorce?” As in, is this someone I believe would be mature and fair, even when they’re upset and don’t particularly like me at the moment. Is this someone I could continue to trust while going through an adversarial process? And if the answer is no, don’t marry them.
“scientists don’t want you know” is a phrase that always cracks me up because if you actually meet a scientist they will be shaking and crying like an overstimulated chihuahua with the need to let you know
Funny that the stereotypical cynic is an idealist who aged out of it. In my experience, the reverse is true. I was an extreme cynic as a teenager and then I noticed how profoundly limiting it was, and also that "cynics are cool and smart" was a message that was being constantly reinforced by corporate media for some reason.
#yes! cynicism reads as very juvenile to me#and yes prev often stemming from teen pain
Yeah, like I see black-pilled people on here and my default reaction isn't "oh, these must be world-weary old warriors who've lost their faith in humanity", it's "these people are in their 20s and need a hobby"
I also think that the present era has proven that authoritarian leaders don't actually want a population of wide-eyed idealists, they want a population of jaded assholes who are convinced that everyone is lying, any resistance is either a scam or doomed to failure, and nothing can ever get better.
