Most of my friends on the North Fork would rather sell their children than reveal to you their secret clamming spot. I live in a world of competitive clammers: where your harvest of little necks, cherrystones, quahogs and steamers (caught somewhere up creek never to be revealed) are a serious business. If you have ever had the pleasure of being able to eat a clam just plucked from the creek you live near, you, too, will probably decide to join the ranks of the covert clammers.

If you intend to go clamming do get a license, do not take more than you can eat (although I can not possibly imagine eating enough clams) or is allowed by law, and be respectful to the environment. Alternatively, you can head for Braun’s Seafood Market in Cutchogue, or the Clamman in Southampton, purchase at least five dozen clams and let your friends believe that you, too, have your own secret source for clams.
