A Mom's Musings

Emma was crying again. Calia had just laid down, of course.

The woman cracked her eyes open and sighed. She'd just finished feeding her distressed daughter, hadn't even made it back into the kitchen to wash the bottle – so it wasn't that. Emma got changed before each feeding, so it wasn't that either. Probably. At the very least, Calia hadn't heard any sound and fury since then.

There was a moment, as Calia resignedly peeled herself back off the couch, where utter despair set in. This was it, this was the rest of her life, the same day on repeat. She was all of twenty years old, with no business being a mom. Clearly she was lousy at it. A lifetime of advanced placement courses, a doctorate at eighteen, two years with Smith-Shimano, and this was the result: shambling around half-starved and unwashed at 3am with no shirt on, failing to raise a child in a shitbox apartment in the ass-end of the Long Rim.

Then she arrived at Emma's bassinet, and saw her daughter staring up at her with those large black eyes that all infants had, and her irritation instantly evaporated. Calia's breath caught in her throat. Maybe Calia hadn't physically birthed this girl, but Emma was still from her, of her. She was so fragile, so new, so precious. To see her in distress triggered some ancient animal instinct in Calia, making her want to fight tooth and claw against anything troubling her. She couldn't stay mad.

Calia hadn't been entirely comfortable handling the babies at the facility. They were floppy and flimsy, though Maxim asserted that they weren't nearly so fragile as she feared. There'd been 26 in total, labeled A-Z, and past a certain point Calia couldn't stomach simply calling them by such inhuman monikers. She started giving them Quenya names instead. Subject E became Emma, mind-picture, because her daughter was a dream in many respects. Emma was custom-tailored to her partner. Calia wasn't entirely certain who that was meant to be, though she had a hunch; Maxim had mentioned a “Venusian contact” more than once.

And now, gazing down at her inconsolable daughter, Calia got the strange feeling that Emma's cry wasn't a cry at all. This was different from her usual wails of need – it was higher, tremulous, almost like a held note. Was she was calling out for a partner who wasn't due to arrive for eighteen long years? Emma would never meet them now.

Calia reached down to scoop her from her resting place, clumsily holding Emma's heavy head. Perhaps she'd done her daughter a disservice, denying her something so fundamental, something she'd literally been made for. But when she thought of the life that Emma had been due to lead, it made her physically ill. If anything, Calia only regretted having not grabbed Feren as well.

For now, she'd take it one day at a time. It was all she could do. She rocked Emma in her arms and began to walk with her around the apartment, quietly singing Old Tom Bombadil as they went. Emma quieted, staring up at her while clasping a chunk of Calia's hair in one hand. It was almost like she knew the song already.

Eventually, Calia sat down with her on the couch and half-dozed while holding her. Emma fell asleep cuddled to her chest. It wasn't ideal; at the lab, they'd always stressed that infants should only ever sleep upon their backs. But “perfect” wasn't going to happen now, and Calia knew she had to learn to be ok with that. Here and now, her heart bloomed with contentment. Having Emma so close, knowing she felt safe, feeling how warm she was and watching her peaceful slumber...it was everything. Calia wished she could freeze the moment in time so she could remember it forever.

Hopefully, as long as Emma was healthy and happy, it would be enough.
