My first love; the rooster tail

Of all my time spent fishing the hidden and not so hidden gems of New England, I like to think I've learned a thing or two about fishing. While a majority of my time has been spent on foot, breaking a sweat in early spring trekking miles out into the woods following the elusive trout river, I've still managed to break away into other species and other modes of transportation. Boat, Canoe, Bass Raider and more, 65' deep mammoth lakes or glorified mud puddles unnaturally stocked with fish, one lure has always been tucked away safely in my tackle box. This my friends, is the rooster tail.  Love them or hate them, the rooster tail is a proven catcher of fish of all shapes and sizes from fresh water to salt water, and maybe even some other type of water we have yet to discover, as I'm sure it would work there too. If I had a planned fishing trip to Mars and could only bring one lure, it would have to be a rooster tail. While many different companies make them and sell them, there has always been one company in particular that I have been exquisitely fond of.  In my self proclaimed, semi-professional opinion, no one does a rooster tail better than Mepps. They make them in every size, color and pattern you could ever dream of, and the quality is spot on. The price is right for everyone, and I've never thrown a Mepps roster tail and reeled it back in without a fish fighting me on the end of my line. 

While I have shamelessly tried and own every pattern that Mepp's has to offer, there are a few standouts among the glorious lineup of available patterns and sizes. My person favorites for trout are size 0-2's, in White (04), Red (09), Yellow (38) & Rainbow Trout (12 & 25) .  Big Bass and Chain Pickerel will slay a Mepp's Aglia in black/white/red (top) as well as a Black Fury in orange and black (bottom). Although for them I prefer to use sizes 3+, the Aglia and Black fury also come in the smaller sizes Mepp's has to offer.

Long story short, these lures will catch anything, anywhere, anytime. Don't believe me? Spend the $3-$5 for one and go try it out yourself. However I am not responsible for bad casts and poor angling ability.  Keep calm, and fish on! <3 The Tackle Junkies
