The brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) is the official state fish of Pennsylvania, and the only trout species native to the state's inland streams. Affectionately known as "brookies," or "natives," these fish are technically a member of the char family. They serve as a critical biological indicator of pristine environmental health, as they can only survive in cold, exceptionally clean, and highly oxygenated waterways.
Pennsylvania boasts thousands of miles of "Class A Wild Trout Waters" and designated "Wilderness Trout Streams" where wild brook trout reproduce naturally. These populations are heavily concentrated in remote, forested headwaters.
A lightweight fly rod (1 weight to 3 weight), or ultralight spinning gear is ideal for tight canopy streams.
