A LEAP OF FAITH
Relapse Review DEBOSYON
After a decade I get to blog this review.
Debosyon 2013 Cinemalaya Film Fest Entry starring Mara Lopez as Saling mystical creature (diwata) and Paulo Avelino Mando a farmer who is a devotee of the Virgin of Peňafrancia
This is my least favorite movie of Paulo Avelino not because I don't like it I actually like it so much but because this is one of his movies na "niyayanig ang prinsipyo ko" in a surface this is just a Fantasy Movie. A farmer got into an accident while foraging thru the forest and gathering orchids, a mysterious woman helped him and nursed him back to health. They fell in love but Mando learned the true nature of Saling. Very "folklorish" right?
Paulo Avelino's acting never fails, him speaking and singing in Bikolano totally rad, the subtleness but compelling portrayal especially the moment when he learned the true nature of the woman he loves that she's from the otherlyworld, very layered from sobbing to weeping and bawling you can feel the turmoil and the hard realizations. Frightened but love prevailed he went back to Saling with a faith healer in tow. To cut the story short Mando being a devotee of Peñafrancia followed the advice of the faith healer: pray to free Saling from the curse, Mando went like traslacion esque and then goes back to Saling hoping for a good outcome but it did not change Saling. She's still a diwata. He accepted the truth and I really don't know how to interpret the ending (leave it to the viewers to give their own interpretation) what I know is; it shaken my faith to the core when our prayers went unanswered and we fall back to earth and then take a leap of faith again, hope against all hopes like what Mando did in the movie. Give it all for love. The film gives out a unique perspective on Love and Faith. Faith, hope and love indeed are intertwined.
What I love about this movie is the profoundness. It weaved the elements of Romance, spirituality and Filipino folklore. Very thought provoking. I love the silences. Sometimes silence is the best expression of love. The lushness of its cinematography. Visually stunning. It gives out an ethereal and earthly feels. This is not just your usual fantasy movie but a love story and a love letter to nature. The movie is so filipino and because this is a Paulo Avelino film it can never go wrong.
GRADUATE NA AKO!
A Relapse Review of I'm Drunk I Love You
Is an Indie Rom-com movie, a story about friendship and unrequited love, set in a backdrop of a road trip to La Union (ELYU) before their graduation day, its a coming of age film about losing out those chances and opportunities, the fear of transistioning into adult life and the blurry lines between friendship and romance. What I love about this film : are the witty lines, like how 3 college friends real life conversations should be especially when they are drunk. Very relatable characters, a boy, a girl and a gay friend that would complete our college barkada troupe who are going thru these major changes in their lives, the girl (Carson) needs some closure over her harbored unrequited love for that indecisive, 'kinda jerk but no-nonsense guy friend (Dio) and a gay friend (Jason Ty) tagged along and also looking for some adventure to fill the void in his life. The movie is not affected by the passage of time everytime I rewatch it, "Walang kontrabida sa istorya" the villain was the situation, the incidents that's why it still ache so much up to this day. Did Dio feel the same way? I DON'T KNOW all I know is that, this is the most relatable character that Paulo Avelino ever portrayed and he played it so well.
I would like also to commend the Music used in the movie all from Indie artists which added a nostalgic atmosphere to the film
I like the ending so much that it hurts when Carson said "Graduate na ako" its like she finally moved on from that feelings she harbored for 7 years all forward motions for her, attagirl!!! HER and Dio laughing together at the end its like saying "Friends na ulit tayo" but I still need a sequel please. Badly
GATEKEEP KAHIT ANG ARTIST NAGIGIPIT
My 3AM thoughts after watching LINLANG "Gatekeep kahit ang artist nagigipit" this is not just an under the radar playlist on spotify but can also be attributed to many things that are "NON MAINSTREAM". That is how Paulo is to me, unconventional, rare so underground
Like the beauty of an Indie Film with an unorthodox storytelling Paulo Avelino refuses to relinguished his power to showbiz, not even to fame or money thus as a fan I've learned the art of low-maintenance fangirling & appreciate him more on the merits of his talent & artistry.
Stories of how he filmed DEBOSYON back to back while shooting Sana Dati & Walang Hanggan. Driving from Manila to Bicol to get to the location, helping the crew and not afraid of getting dirty for the role. Working with out talent fee for Ang Larawan and more anecdotes about how he is as an actor and his work ethics
All of these are testaments of how great of an actor he is. His passion for his craft was palpable in every role he played, like an artist his strokes and notes have come together seamlessly to create something special that you cannot imagine anyone portraying that role but him.
Saan ako dinala ng aking paghanga? Below the radar admiration, not privy about his personal life. In a changing landscape of TV/Movie Industry I begin to hope that new breed of fans are born. Fans who have high regards for artistry coz someone like Paulo deserves that
