フェイクニュースの需要と供給

下馬評を覆しドナルド・トランプの勝利で幕を閉じた2016年の米国大統領選挙や、これまた事前の予想を覆すブレグジット（EU離脱）賛成という結論が出た英国の国民投票において、主にネット上でばらまかれる虚偽情報、いわゆる「フェイクニュース」が大きな役割を果たした、ということになり、洋の内外を問わず様々なところでフェイクニュースを巡る議論が盛んに行われるようになった。私もいくつかカンファレンス等に参加したのだが、率直に言って、個人的には違和感のある議論が多かったように思う。

なぜ違和を感じたのか自分なりに考えてみたのだが、フェイクニュースについて発言する論者の多くがメディア関係者のせいか、どうもフェイクニュースの供給側に偏った議論が多いせいではないかと思われる。供給側の議論とは、ようするにフェイクニュースをばらまくメディアの側に問題があるということで、例えば業界団体による自主規制であるとか、ファ…

Recently it was announced that scientists may have found a new way to encrypt data on the internet with no possibility of it being intercepted by the wrong people, by using beams of ‘entangled’ light particles.

But how is the encryption of data on the internet done today? The RSA enciphering process, published in 1978 and used across the web, hides plain text messages using prime numbers. But will we ever run out of prime numbers?
