Cain has more AUs / Verses than I can throw a stick at ---
child -- Cain at age 10 , just after his parent’s passing and subsequent surgery . He’s tiny for his age , and showing signs of that shy personality he’ll develop as an adult .
“ normal ” -- Cain , but if he didn’t have albinism . Generally less timid , more confidant . Dark chestnut hair and golden tan skin like his brother , his mother . He still takes after his father in facial structure .
royal -- A prince . His birth brought a year of prosperity , and so the kingdom believes him blessed . Favored by God , maybe , given how pure he is .
assassin / mafia -- Earnestness makes him a good errand boy and a reliable asset with that unassuming air . What kind of threat could a meek boy like him possibly pose ? His brother mends breaks and bruises and gun wounds as an underground doctor while Cain takes whatever task he’s given . His specialty is poisons and mutilation .
tattoo -- based off that flowershop / tattoo parlor idea . Of course , an artist , Cain works at the latter . He’s freer , more open . Somehow , he navigated through life to arrive at some content state . Good for ships , I guess .
demon -- more just a concept for drawing than playing
girl -- Catherine , instead . She grew up the same way as Cain , developing a similar personality , similar worries . Unlike Cain , though , she caught the eye of John . One thing led to another -- now , she’s married to him with two children , uncertain how to feel about the whole arrangement . It isn’t love , but she’ll convince herself it is .
psycho-pass -- Cain is a borderline case , treading the line between “ safe ” and “ unstable ” despite great efforts . He’s still a diligent Investigator , though . Perhaps that’s all that’s keeping him there , and how well he works .
fullmetal alchemist -- ( tbh this is the verse Cain was originally developed in ) Enlarged heart remains , with an unidentified digestive condition added on that left him small , fragile , skin and bones as a child . At 10 , Cain’s parents died , and his brother and friend , John , dove into Alchemic study , pursuing a cure for Cain’s poor health and inevitable , premature death . When Cain turned 16 , the two performed a transmutation on him , saving him . Damien and John went on to develop their medical alchemy , while Cain pursued the arts .
fullmetal alchemist v2 -- either the transmutation failed , or they couldn’t perfect it in time . In either case , Cain dies an early death . Damien , determined , turns to the taboo . He and John catch the eye of the military , and their research is funded . They perform human transmutation , and the homunculus War comes to be . ( this is from when I was in highschool don’t judge me too hard weh . cain actually grew out of this dude so rly this is where everything started . )
older -- mid-30s . Cain finally gets the help he needs . He’s free to be himself . He’s happy , content .
;; It’s very fun watching Cain’s nervous ticks smooth out over time as he gets to know someone and get comfortable with them. His speech pattern is inspired by my brother who has a similarly hard time getting his thoughts in order. For Cain it’s a mix of that and nervousness, as well as trying to put everything into a secondary language (he was born with French, grew up with French, and only started learning English in University), so he’s always pausing, making sure he’s saying the right word in the right way. As he grows familiar with another, his pattern eases, tension loosening. He starts to joke back, talk back, generally have an easier time. It’s fun! And it shows just how much more comfortable he’s getting with someone when he can go a whole sentence without pausing or stuttering.
