I am always a bit baffled that there are such strong reactions against Jiang Cheng allegedly torturing and killing a bunch of demonic cultivators in a story where the actual protagonist does in fact very explicitly and unambiguously torture a bunch of people to death in truly creative and horrifying ways, which includes not only forcing a guy to eat his own legs but also feeding his fingers to an undead baby. I mean, to each their own obviously, but like, this is where we’re going to draw the proverbial line in the sand?

what do you think would have happened if Orihime actually ended up kissing Ichigo during that chapter? 🤔

She wouldn't confess then. Everything that happend in Halcyon Days chapter comes from impulsivity: both the attempted kiss and confession. Neither are things that Orihime prepared herself to do since stealing a kiss is obviously something she would have never thought about with a clear mind...it was a sudden impulse given the threat of death and "never coming back home" on her head and that is also why she stopped and scolded herself before kissing Ichigo.

For Ichigo, I don't think he would have been aware of any of it in any circumstances. He isn't aware of her confession nor her attempted kiss in canon so far, and wouldn't have been aware even if she did kissed him. Or else it would take away from the weight and gravity that comes after in the narrative: that Orihime is actually a supposed traitor which, while Ichigo is obviously convinced she isn't, he has no concrete proof that she was coerced to join Aizen: he must have faith in her instead that something happend to her ( which got confirmed when confronting Ulquiorra in Las Noches ).

So if she did kiss him we probably wouldn't have had her heartfelt confession. It doesnt change fundamentally anything from the narrative but having Orihime stoping herself from disrespecting Ichigos boundaries and consent ( which is recurrent in their relationship ) and her heartfelt confession, which is one of Kubo's and many readers favorite scene.

((Because I feel it’s probably worth elaborating on, here’s my breakdown of how I feel the Dark Hour, TV World, and Metaverse compare and the effects they each have on their powers. In order from most draining to least draining:

Dark Hour > Metaverse > TV World

Like I mentioned in the tags, this is based on some things mentioned in P4 Arena, namely the fact that the very first thing the SEES crew discover is that they don’t need their Evokers to summon a Persona. Mitsuru even comments that it’s easier to summon her Persona there; she just thinks about it and BAM! There she is.

And I feel like how easy/hard it is to summon a Persona in each realm is connected to the “theme” of each one. The Dark Hour/P3 is all about facing your mortality, and as such it’s the most physically and mentally draining of the three. The TV World/P4 is all about facing the truth and accepting the things about yourself that make you uncomfortable, therefore becoming more comfortable with yourself. And making it the least physically and mentally draining (in the long run, certainly).

The Metaverse/P5 is somewhere in between the two, I feel. Like P4, it’s about accepting the uglier, less appealing sides of yourself: your anger, your grief, your frustration with the world and/or specific people mistreating you. But rather than just simply accepting them, you embrace and weaponize them-you rebel against the forces telling you these things are unacceptable. So it’s kind of a double-edged sword: on the one hand, you’re facing the truth and accepting yourself for who you are. On the other hand, it’s very much possible to end up going too far and embracing self-destructive coping mechanisms and mindsets (COUGH AKECHI COUGH), so it becomes especially important to cultivate your bonds with other people who are willing to give you a friendly slap in the face if/when you start to go too far.

So, with that in mind, I feel that SEES would find it much easier to operate in both the Metaverse and the TV World than the Dark Hour, with the TV World being like Super Easy Mode. The Investigation Team, meanwhile, would struggle with the Dark Hour the most, but would at least have the cushion of having the least draining summoning method. The Phantom Thieves would struggle a bit with the Dark Hour and find the TV World much easier, though probably not quite as starkly as SEES. The Phantom Thieves probably wouldn’t automatically change costumes in the TV World, but they’d still find themselves able to summon their Personas, and with a bit more ease than they’re used to. ...Actually, Futaba specifically might find it particularly easy, since her awakening was most similar to a P4 awakening anyway.))

Hello! Your posts are a joy to read, and I was wondering: would you happen to have any more delightful thoughts/headcanons to share about the chaos that are the Yunmeng Jiang sect disciples and the grumpy jiujiu leading them?

THE JIANG CHAOTICSPHERE SHALL REIGN SUPREME FOR ALL OF TIME! Also, I'm so very glad that you enjoy my insanity. :D

But I love the Jiang disciples so much! I know we get perhaps all of 20 seconds combined worth of footage, but I will remain obsessed with those background scenes forever.

Do you see any other disciple fearlessly poking the Sandu Shengshou's chest wound? Or aggressively manhandling him away from a blood-soaked battlefield? Or picking up after his dramatically discarded capes as they traipse across country? How many disciples of other sects do you see happily proclaiming that their former head disciple hasn't forgotten them while his army of disquiet spirits casually murders everyone else around them?

Screams? What screams? Da-shixiong still loves us!

This chaotic behavior could only come from the Jiangs. Trained by Wei Wuxian, imbued with his spirit, and nurtured by Jiang Yanli's wondrous ability to look at her little brothers committing several scrolls of war crimes and going: Babies. MY babies.

I actually find their chaos incredibly heartwarming. For Jiang Cheng especially. While the rest of the cultivation world has spun stories about the fearsome leader of the Jiang sect, the one that you do not cross, it's so clear that his disciples give absolutely no shits about his reputation. He may be the world's Sandu Shengshou, but he's still just their hot, well-dressed, grumpy purple grape sect leader. This ancient Chinese spreadsheets-loving man who probably puts talisman trackers on all of them so that he knows where they are at all times, who spends hours lecturing them on the importance of sticking together, who trains and drills them into the ground because he wants them to be good, to be the best, so that they can be safe. So that when war comes knocking on their doorsteps again, this time, they'll win.

Even in just these short seconds of footage, you can tell their loyalty for Jiang Cheng is absolute. I love that. I love that for him. Jiang Cheng, who loses his entire family, who rebuilds his sect in the ashes of all that he has lost, who wraps himself in an armor of fury and bitterness and regret that is near impenetrable, but here is a group of disciples who peel those layers away as if they're not there at all. Who knows him, perhaps not as well as his siblings once did, but who love him in that same effortless way.

Because of course they do. Wei Wuxian's and Jiang Yanli's love for Jiang Cheng transcends through time and lives on in the Lotus Pier that he rebuilds in their memory. And it'll be ready when its last member finally comes home.

Everyone is guilty for all the things Jiang Cheng is constantly criticized for. Torturing cultivators? Check. Not helping the Wen remnants? Check. Not standing by Wei Wuxian? Check. Shouting? Check. Lying? Check. Being an asshole at some point in their life? Absolutely check.

Everyone jokes around about the Lan’s Silencing Spell, including myself, but um, using your sect’s magical coercion spell to silence someone else’s voice multiple times is actually kind of fucked up? Nobody says anything about the Lans and Nies being equally, if not more so, complicit in what ends up happening with the Wens and Wei Wuxian, but it’s still Jiang Cheng who gets the most criticism, and I will never be okay with this.

Hell, Wei Wuxian himself committed pretty much all of these! As much as we love Wei Wuxian for his endlessly giving heart, we should keep in mind that he also didn’t do anything about the Wens until Wen Qing and Wen Ning were involved. That isn’t a criticism. That is just the nature of the society and culture that they live in, where blood feuds are a thing and wiping out a clan who killed your family is simply an equal and just exchange regardless of individual involvement. Wei Wuxian committed a massive cultural taboo for helping the Wen remnants. That isn’t to say he shouldn’t have helped, or that everyone isn’t complicit in the death of a bunch of villagers who were trying to move on, but that responsibility and criticism certainly shouldn’t only land squarely on Jiang Cheng’s shoulders.

Especially when Jiang Cheng was still little more than a child himself. The Jiang sect was completely wiped out. Jiang Cheng was barely holding onto any political power as it is. They were being intentionally left out of political meetings by the other three sects. They were extremely vulnerable to being swallowed up and becoming subsidiary to the Jin sect. Jiang Cheng had an immense responsibility to his people who walked with him through war when he had nothing to offer them at time other than his word, and part of that responsibility was to not go around pissing off your next door neighbors who had a hell of a lot more power than you do at the moment.

And amidst of all this, Jiang Cheng was being actively lied to the entire time! He couldn’t possibly have known that Wei Wuxian, his genius cultivator shixiong, no longer had a golden core, whose only option was now demonic cultivation and who was neck deep in a veritable thunderstorm of trauma and self-hatred. Especially when Wei Wuxian was constantly telling him he was fine. Especially when Wei Wuxian was doing everything he could to make sure Jiang Cheng could never know the truth. While I do think Jiang Cheng was wrong about what options were available to him, I personally think he was the least obligated out of everyone to help.

You know whose sects didn’t get wiped out? Who still had political power and was actually at the table when the remaining Wens and labor camps were being discussed? Who still had experienced disciples and opinionated elders? Who had at least much more experience navigating the complicated web of political manipulations than Jiang Cheng? The Lans. The Nies. Both equally capable of putting a stop to Jin Guangshan. Both equally responsible for the murders of a bunch of villagers. Both absolutely one hundred percent more obligated to do so and in a position where it was possible than Jiang Cheng was.

But sure, let’s freaking blame the traumatized teenager whose family and sect were slaughtered for not being able to help.

Hi...random question. How do you feel that canonically after married Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian officially become member of the Lan Sect? What would Jiang Cheng reaction would be (do you think)?

Wei Wuxian being a member of both Lan and Jiang are not, in my opinion, mutually exclusive things. They can in fact exist together! While it’s canon that Wei Wuxian marries Lan Wangji, and he is Lan by way of that marriage, Lan Qiren does still carve Do Not Go Near Wei Ying into the stone slab of Lan edicts, so there’s that.

Regardless, Wei Wuxian being a Jiang is a whole separate issue, and a decision that still belongs to both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian. It’s pretty clear by the time we get to Yanli’s wedding dress reveal that Wei Wuxian getting ousted from the Jiang is just a cover story, even if both Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian are still pretty fucked up about it. But whether Jiang Cheng officially wipes Wei Wuxian from the sect registry after Yanli dies and the siege is up for the debate. It’s not like Jiang Cheng is all that great at saying what he feels or actually ends up doing. Stop whining like a brat! he says as he very carefully carries a bowl of soup to his brother’s bedside.

But I think Jiang Cheng feels the same fucked up complicated mess about Wei Wuxian marrying into Lan as he does about everything else concerning his brother. From where he stands, Wei Wuxian is moving on with his life. He elopes with Lan Wangji and visibly seems to be leaving the past in the past. Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng is still miserably stuck in the trenches because he still loves his brother. He still desperately wants to know that he, their family, and the Jiang sect meant as much to Wei Wuxian as he did to them. Obviously, we know that Wei Wuxian is not in fact leaving any past behind him at all. This dumbass is in actuality all up in his nephew’s business, fully entrenched in said past, imploring Jin Ling very specifically and accurately not to protect Jiang Cheng by lying and pushing him away. Gosh, now where could Wei Wuxian possibly have come up with that idea?

What’s great about all the adaptations is that Wei Wuxian’s status with the Jiang is left open. It’s the unfinished story, and there’s still so much story left for them both to live. Obviously, I’m of the opinion that Wei Wuxian still is and will always be a Jiang, but more to the point, he is and will always be Jiang Cheng’s brother. Jiang Cheng who kept the flute. Who never gets any dogs. Who willingly risked his life to save Wei Wuxian. They just need time, and maybe a side of nephew meddling, but of course they’ll find their way back to each other. After all, they are Jiang. Attempting the impossible is just the family business.
