I'm so fucking tired of people throwing the word "cult" around like it's water

tarfia faizullah’s work really hits on a different level when i think of nal because not only is she bengali but she’s also a native texan so it’s like, a lot of her work applies to nal so heavily and so intimately it’s almost scary. i know nalini felt out of place as a child, the path to self love is very difficult and i know considering nal it was ... hard to come to terms with the fact that she’d have to accept who she was and how she existed otherwise she’d just ... deteriorate. how she looked differently, how she behaved differently. how she’s perceived differently both in america and in bangladesh -- either she’s too american or too ethnic, there’s no in between.

additionally i think about how nalini began to approach how differently she looked and behaved alongside her majority white peers as a young child, and how she navigates both the human world as a bengali woman, and the supernatural woman as a brown witch once she’s older. formulating her own identity was hard and she really had to figure out what ... was valuable to her. it definitely started with branching out and finding new people. who was “nalini” and what did she want in her life. at what point would “nalini” become her own being and not the additional tags people always seem to tack onto her name.
