You know those mornings when you wake up to the sound of birds singing, eat a very healthy, very Instagram worthy meal and then go about your day knowing that everything will go your way? Today had not been one of those days.
The alarm clock had woken Sorn up in the middle of a good dream and from then on it had only gotten worse. She had given up on the idea of making breakfast as she had been forced to scrape the charred remains of it into the bin. Instead deciding to get ready and go look for a nice café nearby, she accidentally melted her toothbrush while brushing her teeth, (it had now joined her intended breakfast in the bin) and was so distressed by that that she managed to set one of her socks on fire while getting dressed. It ended up being the straw that broke the camel’s back. Sorn simply had to do something about it. She needed breakfast and she needed, well, help.
She knew where she had to go. It was a place she had been somewhat avoiding since arriving in Mount Phoenix, not because she was nervous or intimidated (oh no, of course not) but because… Because firstly, she’d been well of without a father her whole life and secondly he probably had no interest in meeting her either way. Oh, and thirdly, the Black Forest Bakery probably wouldn’t live up to the hype either way, right?
Now was the time to find out.
Trying hard to shake off any lingering doubts (and almost being successful), Sorn walked through the door of the bakery only to be hit by the most delicious smell of freshly baked bread. Her stomach rumbling audibly with hunger. The burnt sock was slightly itchy, but she tried not to think about it as she placed a great-smelling bagel and a beautiful chocolate croissant on a tray and walked up to the counter, greeting the cashier with a small ”hi” and the cheeriest smile she could produce while being so very hungry. As her breakfast was being wrapped up, Sorn gathered the courage to finally ask for the very reason she was on the island. ”By the way, I’d like to talk to the owner of the bakery. Is he in today?”
