Fully focusing on the teddy, Sorn hadn’t noticed the person walking up to her, until he suddenly spoke. She was startled for a moment, but quickly decided that he must have good intentions (he did offer to help after all). Sorn mirrored his smile while nodding eagerly.
“I’d love some help! Are you good at this? I thought it looked really easy but I’m apparently terrible at tossing these where I want them to go.” She waved the rings in the air for emphasis before offering them to the other. Not that she could be sure that he was very good at ring tossing either, but it was at least worth a try. “I just really want that teddy bear,” she continued, pointing. “Doesn’t it look really soft and snuggly?”
“I’m not sure, but I guess we’ll find out,” he replied, shrugging. He had been pretty good at horseshoes when he was younger, and this seemed sort of similar, so maybe he would be alright at it. He took the rings from her with a smile, holding them in his hands for a moment to get a feel for them. She was right, it did not look like a hard game– but that was the whole point of carnival games, right? To appear deceptively easy.
“It does look really soft and snuggly,” he agreed, stepping closer to the booth and lining up a shot. Aiming carefully, he tossed the first ring, which landed squarely on one of the pegs. He turned to her with a grin, seemingly very pleased with himself. “Ne t'inquiète pas, Mademoiselle.” And then he repeated himself so she would understand: “Don’t worry. I’ll get the bear for you~”
To be quite honest, Sorn did doubt that this boy would be able to win her the teddy bear. (She had come to the conclusion that winning a carnival game wasn’t s easy as it looked after all.) Still, this was probably her best shot if she wanted to bring the teddy home with her. She had her full focus on the ring in his hand as he tossed it, following its course through the air.
Sorn all but jumped with joy as the first ring landed perfectly on its peg. She had to stop herself from giving him a big hug, instead resorting to clapping her hands together in a small applause. This boy who had been kind enough to ask if she wanted help was the best thing that had happened to her for days – it really looked like the teddy might become hers. “You’re really good at this!” she exclaimed, beaming. “And definitely better than me, it took me four tries to even get close to the peg...” She couldn’t keep quiet for more than a beat, excited as the chance of winning the teddy bear seemed so much bigger now. “Try the next one! The first toss is the hardest, I think. It should get easier now!”
