Born to Howard and Marie Valentine on January 19th, 2035 in Chicago, Illinois -- Nicholas R. Valentine was an only child who received all the love and affection from his doting parents as they had wanted to expend all their attention on only one child. Though, it was Howard who had filled the boy’s head with acts of honor through his stories of his time in the military, imprinting a great sense of right and wrong on Nick’s young mind. This sense only deepened further as Howard’s tough but fair demeanor guided the boy as he grew, coupled with Nick’s growing fascination with the detectives in his comic books.
Nick idolized his father, wanting nothing more than to follow in the man’s foot steps, yet, was warned fiercely by his mother not to go into the military, fearing that her son may never return or end up severely wounded. Respecting this, Nick turned his attention instead to law enforcement, studying to become a police officer and was hired on to a local Police Department in May of 2056. With his passion to help as many people as possible, Nick quickly rose through the ranks and a reputation followed, earning him the title ‘honest cop’ of Chicago.
While many commended his efforts, another force sought to snuff out the do good-er. Corruption had run high throughout Chicago PD and the mafia was pulling the strings. With one letter to the Commissioner, Nick’s fate was sealed and he was transferred to a smaller department where his every move was monitored and sanctioned if he became too nosy with the behind the scenes activity of the mafia; as their involvement with many cases had become apparent to him. Bets were made if Valentine would break his honest nature or if he would quit the force altogether.
The lines of right and wrong blurred for Nick then; his leads either cut off or his hand restrained from investigating further --- all his progress at a stand still. The corruption was obvious to him now, but with what little he could do and no one to trust, Nick had no other choice but to leave his position as police captain in 2063.
He relied on instinct and experience in the months that followed his leave -- donning a trench coat and finely pressed suit, Nick investigated on his own, determined to completely loosen the mafia’s tightly bound grip on the police and in the process, restore sincere law abiding policemen back to the force.
Through many trials and tribulations, Valentine was able to diminish the corruption by half -- either by exposing the truth to the press or by confrontation. In the year 2068 a new commissioner was hired, after the last had quietly left out of fear of being exposed, since rumors spoke of being next on the vengeful ex-cop’s list. Cleaning up the rest of the criminality seemed effortless as the new commissioner proved to be loyal to the law, replacing over 500 staff members associated with mob activity and correcting the wrongs. It was then Nick rejoined Chicago P.D., though, now under the title of detective.
In the months following, the press buzzed with the news of the daring ex-cop and the righteousness of the commissioner -- how their actions had been next to heroics. While Nick enjoyed the spread of the good news in the paper, the sudden attention felt surreal as he had grown used to the solitude of working alone. It wasn’t long before this attention brought a cry of help that came in the form of a telegram, requesting for Nick’s presence to be transferred to Massachusetts.
Dutifully, he went under the permission of the commissioner, finding out later on that Massachusetts was suffering the same fate. Corruption. Though this time it had a name; Edward Winter. The man in question was far more elusive than any other gang member he encountered and always three steps ahead of Nick’s two.
A breakthrough in the investigation came dressed in heels -- one of Winter’s goons having involved the dame in one of their smuggling heists and allowing her to take the fall. A juvenile plan that revealed more about Winter’s intentions as Ms. Jennifer Lands had been far more than forthcoming with her involvement during her interrogation than any other suspect they had caught.
She had been thrown into the fray unknowingly and had come out with a stiff upper lip, answering Nick’s questions in the same brevity that he asked them. Jennifer was tough, smart, but she was too young to understand the real danger she was in or so Nick had perceived. So once she was released, the detective made an effort to check up on her, making sure that Winter’s goons wouldn’t come around to finish her off. Yet, as time passed, the short visits had become long chats over dinner and after more time his personal items had found a place next to hers.
Their involvement with each other was only known between them as Valentine didn’t want Jennifer to become a target, neither did he want to be removed from the case for fraternization with a previous suspect. Though no matter how secretive they had been, Winter had found out and within the week, Jennifer had been shot dead and left to cool overnight.
The news had hit him like a truck, and a great sadness overcame him as he viewed her on the coroners table lying listless and silent when she had always been jubilant. He would never hear her laugh, sing, or even hum ever again. Rage had become his master in that moment and he made a mental promise to return the favor to Winter personally.
Ironically, the man was caught the same day, though he expressed no frustrations at being caged. Nor did he complain, only smirked as if he had already won, as if this was now just some joke. The only thing that was left was to find incriminating evidence to keep him locked away. And Nick searched tirelessly, sparking some concern from his colleges. He searched in vain for what seemed like hours -- checking and re-checking case notes, but nothing was left behind and there were no clues.
Within 72-hours, Winter was released and Operation Winter's End was disbanded. Adding insult to injury, the commissioner of B.A.D.T.F.L . ordered treatment for Nick’s anger, deeming it P.T.S.D. from the recent loss of Jennifer Lands as their involvement together had become evident after her death.
Reluctant and far from done with Winter, Nick went to the C.I.T. as instructed -- his only hope was that his treatment would help him regain his focus so that he could pursue Winter. Yet upon entering the building, Valentine was struck with a great sense of unease and this feeling only deepened further as they had began his therapy.
Test after test, scan after scan, Nick didn’t feel any different from when they first started, except tired and when he specified so -- was made to lie down on a examination table. A nurse came to him moments later, informing him to relax while she administered medicine to help him do so. Nothing came to mind as the pinch of a needle pierced the skin of his upper arm, eyes wincing at the pain that it brought.
On October 12th, 2077, detective Nick Valentine took his final breaths as the lethal sedative worked its will in his veins.
Its called a CSS Card Flip Animation. There are a lot of tutorials out there, but the one I used was by David Walsh. I’m not confident enough to give a full tutorial, but the basics of how I did it are under the cut and I will probably post the full theme code on NoodleHelps eventually.
Basically the best way I can explain it is that the “front” of your card is the picture and the “back” is the posts.
You’re going to want the get the CSS and paste that above as with anything you create.
The HTML part is only a little bit tricker. Start with the code I have below, and post that right before your posts (which is probably div id=“posts” or something).
Now you literally just insert whatever you want the front of your card to be. Mine is an image, but you could also use text or whatever. Now paste in the code below, this closes the FRONT of the card and then opens the back.
Now scroll to RIGHT BELOW your posts and put in these three close tags.
Now if its being stupid, that’s probably because tumblr doesn’t like you to copy and paste code and messes with the parenthesis, so you probably shouldn’t copy and paste directly from me, go to the blog I linked instead and find the code that matches mine.
TUTORIAL: using discord webhooks to get tumblr notifications in discord
hello everyone !! i’ve been using discord webhooks to get notifications in a channel of a personal server when i receive a new reply, ask, mention, comment, or follower on any of my rp or personal accounts. you are also able to read the received asks, replies, and mentions you get right in the discord channel.
as someone with a fair number of separate tumblr accounts, it’s been a great feature to avoid having multiple windows or tumblr sessions open at once while still being aware of new activity on all my tumblr blogs.
it’s super easy to set up and requires only very basic knowledge of tumblr and discord !! the tutorial walks you through every step and shouldn’t take longer than 5-10 minutes at most to set up ( depending on how many blogs you are linking ).
not sure if this is something you’re interested in ?? examples of this in use are under the cut before the tutorial begins !!
written 06.16.22. last edited 02.05.26.
WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE IN USE...
in general you are told who the notification is from, and if there is something new to read, it is displayed !! where applicable, the top text in blue is a hyperlink directly to the post it is notifying you of !!
NEW FOLLOWER NOTIF:
RECEIVED ASK:
NEW REBLOG ( non-reply / no added caption ):
NEW REBLOG ( with a reply ):
with the beta editor + trim reblogs, you will see your partner’s new reply. formatting doesn’t come through, but everything is readable!
A REPLY ( a comment on a post ): you are told who the comment is from and can read the comment left on the post.
A MENTION: you are told who mentioned you in the post or comment as well as the comment or post itself. you can click the blue link text at the top to be brought right to the relevant post!
GETTING STARTED
this integration is extremely easy and straightforward to set up, especially if you’re already familiar with discord !! you do not need discord nitro or anything special in discord for this to work.
first and foremost, you will need a “personal server” in discord so you can set the channel where you will receive your notifications. the way i have mine set up is a category dedicated to webhooks and a channel for each muse or account. if you are using this to pull in asks from an rp main or other shared account, you could also pull the notifications into your ooc server in a private admin-only channel.
create the channel you want your notifications to go to BEFORE proceeding.
ON DISCORD
in your personal server ( or the server you will be pulling the notifications into ), right click on the server name to head to server settings > integrations > webhooks.
you can also click the settings symbol next to the channel you wish the webhooks to go to and then go to integrations > webhooks. this saves you from having to select the channel from a dropdown later.
click “New Webhook” and you will see the default webhook set up. this page is also where you can return to later and adjust any of your existing webhook settings if needed (eg. post to a different channel, change a webhook icon) or delete a webhook if it is no longer needed. new webhooks will automatically generate on this page. there is no popup. you may need to scroll down to see the new webhook with a discord generated name & icon.
you can set your webhook icon and name. i usually correspond this to the particular muse the webhook will be used for ( eg. use the same icon for the webhook as i do for the blog it pertains to and name the webhook the same url as the blog ), and then select the channel you want your notifications to go to from the drop down.
you can have ONE webhook for each blog ( sideblogs can be separated out ) if you wish. at this time for a single blog you cannot have different notification types or on a post-by-post basis post to different discord channels as a blog can only use one webhook at a time (and therefore must post to the same channel).
i currently have one webhook for each rp account i have that each post to their own channel, as well as several webhooks which collect any asks i receive on my personal non-rp accounts and post to the same channel.
you can have multiple webhooks post to the same channel by selecting the same channel in the webhook setup or use the same webhook across multiple blogs by pasting the same webhook url into each separate blog ( but it will look the same for all of them, of course ).
once your webhook looks like you want it to, click “Copy Webhook URL”.
HEAD TO TUMBLR
this integration is part of tumblr labs so you need to make sure you have those enabled. on your account, head to settings > labs. toggle on “Enable Tumblr Labs”.
scroll to the bottom and toggle on “Tumblr to Discord Webhooks”.
head to the settings of the blog or sideblog you want to link the webhook to ( the same place where you can control your ask box, who can message you, your url, etc ). scroll to the bottom and there is new section called “Discord Notifications” !!
08/10/23 edit: some users have reported that the “Discord Notifications” section does not always show up immediately. the settings page needs to completely refresh for the section to show, so first try manually refreshing the settings page. if this does not work, toggle the tumblr to discord webhooks off and on and refresh. it has reportedly always shown up with a little time and persistence.
paste the Webhook URL you copied from discord in the text field and then toggle the items that you wish to receive notifications for in discord.
09/10/23 edit: if you receive an error saying the webhook url is not valid upon pasting it into the entry box, make sure the webhook url uses ‘discord.com’ and not ‘discordapp.com‘. the webhook should look like: https://discord.com/api/webhooks/<insert long series of numbers here>/<insert long series of upper and lowercase letters>. updating your discord app is also recommended if you have not done so recently.
in order, i am receiving notifications on : any new followers, any new asks, any new reblogs ( replies or if someone reblogs a promo or otherwise ), any new replies ( if someone comments on a post of mine ), and any new mentions (if someone @’s you in a post).
12/29/23 edit: you still receive a notification in discord when you reply if you wrote the starter ( even though tumblr has removed activity notifications when you interact with your own posts ). i have also noticed that sometimes two simultaneous notifications will come in for your partner’s reply if you wrote the starter ( eg. your partner’s reply shows twice on discord ).
this ends the tutorial — you should be all ready to go !! feel free to send yourself an ask or follow one of your own blogs to test it out.
CONCLUDING NOTES
i hope you found this helpful !! and if you did, please consider giving this a like or reblog.
if you come across any bugs while setting this up, please consider dropping something in my ask so that i can include it in the tutorial. thanks so much <3
I could write positivity for you for days and probably still not get out everything I'd like. You're just incredible, as a writer and as a person in general. Your creativity knows no bounds, and I hope you never restrain yourself, because what you've managed to come up with so far has been astounding to witness. I just think you're neat and such an important part to the community here. Keep it up, Duwangs.
I wish I could respond properly to this, and it’s been in my inbox for a few days now, but I actually do not know what to say. I’m kind of in shock that - well - people are responding well to my Robin, I guess? And my writing? That’s so weird whadda hell -
Okay mun MAY be in a bit of a dump rn so hearing this is so important to me thank you <33
// i’m pretty sure i’ve posted a link to this before, and i WANT to reblog it, but it’s so stinking long that i dont think a long post tag wont do it enough. instead, i’ll post the link again (this time in my hp verse tag for once) and excerpts
there is absolutely no reason hogwarts couldn’t’ve been founded as a monastic school for the education of the clergy, with two houses for women and two for men...
[...]
... in 950, education happened one-on-one, through tutors or apprenticeships. the only, only institution educating in a group format was the church.
why? because clergy came from all classes, because clergy were required to be (at least partially) literate, and because the majority of the population (in some places and eras, from any demographic) was not literate. religious institutions were the only places collecting significant numbers of children and giving them an education.there were two forms of this: cathedral schools, which produced priests, and monastic schools, which produced monks and nuns.
[...]
... so. if you’re going to create a school in 950 in scotland that accepts students from all backgrounds with the goal of educating them, the most reasonable framework for this is the monastic school.
