A heavy veil of sleep lay resting over the whole of my mind, subduing my consciousness with a shroud inky and dark like satin. Dreams came and went, teasing the fringes of my awareness throughout the night, never staying long enough to be remembered. Though suddenly, a thought intruded. A hiss of a name, clawing through my tranquility like a hot knife through skin. Stirring, my limbs were moved awkwardly, sheets entangled around me as I turned to lie on my side. The quietness of my mind was gone… replaced with the elevated pulse of my mimicry of a heart. I stirred again, but this time I moved with more purpose, more urgency. An itch at the back of my mind grew, writhing and twisting until it seared against the back of my eyes, consuming my frequency in its totality.
Within the darkness, my eyes opened suddenly to disturb it, brows lifted as I stared to the window with uncertainty. The call failed to registered in my sleep-addled mind, refusing to believe the command I was hearing. No other here had ever used that form of communication with such strength. Likely because they had not figured out how to directly link themselves with me, or anything so easily, or did not have the knowledge.
Only a handful of beings were even aware of that name in the entire known universe, and even fewer able to slip through my barriers. My head was shaken quickly, dark locks spilling over shoulders as I shot from the position previously assumed, small utterances lost under my breath. The alien words shook my existence, the dreary bedroom melting into the corners of my vision, blossoming and fading like ink blended with water. The world that remained around me was momentarily barren, nothing but a fine, grey mist where distant shapes loomed in the fringes… shifting and moving, traveling past. Just as quickly as it came, it was gone, the empty bursting to life with the night and the sound of crickets.
I lit upon the earth with the soft rush of scuffling leaves, the fall air nipping mercilessly at my bare shoulders. Trees stretched in every direction, the mixture of oaks towering over my form, gnarled and clawing at the light. The odd arrangement of the grove was a natural cathedral, the branches of one tree reaching to tangle with the tips of the opposite. Pale light trickled between each twig, scattering along the forest floor that rustled to life beneath my footsteps.
Fingers had knotted into the thin fabric of my night gown, lifting the silk edges of my wardrobe from the dirt. Each step was careful and calculated, gaze strained to pierce through the shadows, seeking movement.
My voice trembled, the uncertainty scarcely audible as the call echoed a short distance through the humid atmosphere. The tension that hung over me in the silence that followed was broken only by my own breath and the stirring of the trees around me, a soft breeze catching at my back and whipping forward down the trail. Nothing. But who?
To my left, a shadow swayed, moving against the stillness of the trees that surrounded it. Vision darted, eyes narrowed, spying the figure that lurked just beyond the range of my sight.
I questioned once more, but directed it toward what I assumed was the one to call me from my sleep, the fabric in my hands released for arms to instead fold across my chest, feebly attempting to hug away the chill. “Hello?”
