as a kid, rarely did angelo ever have an issue with his parents. he tended to butt heads with his father due to differences on world views, but regularly he had a close relationship with them, specifically his mother. he was a quiet kid, rarely very good at making friends and generally kind to anyone who spoke with him. he was deemed ‘nerdy’ fairly early on, never much into sports. as he grew older, he definitely fell into the ‘losers’ crowd, specifically in middle school. he gathered a group of friends that were easily deemed as the outcasts and he was extremely happy there.
he found his love for music in a shop he started working at, spending most of his afternoons there, and all of his summers, he eventually taught himself how to play piano and guitar. along with the guidance of his boss, he slowly started making songs of his own. he never took much of it seriously, however, enjoying it as a way to spend his time instead of ever looking it as a career path. his interest had always been in history, and while he had dreams to dabble with music, he always tried to keep his expectations completely realistic.
if there was one thing about angelo, it was how seriously he took love. it never took much for him to get a crush on someone, making some silly song about them if they so much as glanced in his direction. he firmly believed in true love, and while he was raised in a religious family, his want to save himself for marriage was just something he felt he wanted to do to make sure he gave all of himself to the person he loved the most.
as he transitioned into high school, he was still very much in the losers crowd, picked on and bothered, though he never really thought much about it - he tended to retaliate with humor. when kennedy approached him, one of the most popular girls in school, he’d assumed it was out of a joke. he assumed it after the first date... and the second, too, until he started to realize that she actually liked him. he fell pretty hard, and quick, but when she implied going further, a very flustered angelo explained his views. and she hugged him, and said that she understood. and he thought that was the truth.
it wasn’t until he got older, looking back, that he really recognized what happened after that. it was a slow build up of isolation, subtle remarks about how they didn’t care for him slowly building to her completely destroying any thought he had in his mind that he was deserving of friends. after isolation came pressure, and as much as angelo hated it, he suffered through whatever she wanted from him. he let her take advantage of his kindness and as the years progressed he shifted to something far more harsh, rude, and off-putting. on top of an obsession with being told he was worthless. he believed it - kindness never hit his ears in a way that didn’t make him feel completely disgusted.
then she abandoned him. graduation came and she lost all contact, leaving angelo with nothing and no one except for his parents. he didn’t want to discuss it, continuing to isolate himself and losing any level of confidence in his future that he ever had. he took a job at the restaurant after graduation and has been there since, occasionally singing badly for the terrible reactions and rarely letting anyone get to know him beyond his cruel words to other and, more importantly, himself.
