Let’s talk about the EU Referendum
There’s only 12 days left
These next couple of weeks, well, less than that really, are probably the most critical weeks when it comes to this referendum.
Whichever campaign has the most momentum in these coming weeks is most likely to win, not definite but, most likely anyway.
Tumblr is an American eccentric site, I’ve barely seen any posts on this issue so I’m going to make one myself because someone fucking has to, so let’s go.
In a recent poll the British Public knows very little about the EU referendum, and if we don’t know anything, tumblr definitely doesn’t.
I’m going to try and keep this as unbiased as possible but as someone who is going to be voting “Remain” I can’t promise that I won’t be completely unbiased. You all have your opinions and reasoning, you do you.
According to research by Ipsos MORI, British people think way more EU citizens live in the UK than there actually are, that we pay way more money into the EU budget than we actually do, and that we overestimate the benefits that EU migrants actually get.
In a survey of 1,000 people, created to represent age, gender and ethnicity the results showed that people thought 15% of the UK population are EU immigrants, that’s around 10.5 million people. The right figure is 3.5 million people. Those who believe are going to vote “Leave” in the referendum claimed the figure was 20%. “Remain” voters said 10%
84% of people believe the UK is in the top three contributors to the EU budget. 23% believes it is the single biggest. The UK is in 4th, behind Germany, which pays 21%, France at 16% and Italy at 12%. The UK pays 11%.

So now all those false statements are gone, let’s talk about what the EU is and the benefits for being in the EU.
What: The European Union (EU) is an economic and political partnership involving 28 European countries.
What does it do for the UK:
The EU is a single market in which no tariffs are put on imports and exports between member states.
Around 3.5 million British jobs are directly linked to British membership of the European Union’s single market.
The EU buys over 50 per cent of UK exports.
The EU negotiates trade agreements with the rest of the world.
British people get lower mobile phone roaming charges, lower credit card fees, cheaper flights and proper compensation when flights are delayed or cancelled.
1.4 million British people live abroad in the EU. More than 14,500 UK students took part in the European Union’s Erasmus student exchange scheme in 2012 through to 2013.
Discrimination by age, race or sexual orientation in the workplace is banned by EU law, which benefits Britain and British people who live in other EU countries.

There’s more but I don’t want this post being too long, even if I could go on for hours.
Why do people want to leave? I hear you cry!
Leaving the EU would result in an immediate cost saving, as the country would no longer contribute to the EU budget.
Under EU law, Britain cannot prevent anyone from another member state coming to live in the country.
According to the Office for National Statistics, there are 942,000 eastern Europeans, Romanians and Bulgarians working in the UK, along with 791,000 western Europeans and 2.93m workers from outside the EU.
The recent pace of immigration has led to some difficulties with housing and service provision.
A drop in immigration would, all else being equal, mean more jobs for the people who remained.
Leaving the EU will allow Britain to re-establish itself as a truly independent nation.
Leaving the EU will allow Britain to have full control over it’s own laws. (That’s the major one).

If there’s pros and cons to both, then why is it so important that people make their mind up and are true to it? Why is it important in general?
Unlike an election, we can’t go back on this in say, 5 years time.
If we leave, we can’t go crawling back to the EU to ask them to take us back again, it doesn’t work like that.
If we stay, the chances of us getting another referendum is so bloody unlikely because we had our chance to have a voice.
That’s why it’s so important to vote. VOTE FOR WHAT YOU WANT. THEY’RE GIVING YOU A VOICE, USE IT.
The campaign to leave the EU has taken a 10 point lead over the remain campaign according to a poll from The Independent.
The survey of 2,000 people discovered 55% want the UK to leave the EU while 45% want to remain.

Personally, this poll I’m not too worried about. A sample of 2,000 people compared to the population of the UK which is roughly 65 million I think isn’t much at all.
Still, it shows that the leave campaign has gained a lot of momentum in the most critical weeks leading up to the vote which is pretty worrying I have to admit.
Is it just a British thing saluting a magpie when you see only one?
