Somewhere in the castle, two children chased each other, both giggling as they played through the long hallways and large rooms. Although it worried Carmen not to have his eyes on them-- having children who can teleport (and maybe shapeshift? He isn't sure on the second one just yet) was difficult to manage in the best of times. Let alone in a country where he didn't speak anything but the basics of the language. However, he did trust Apsel and trusted that Violet and Canary could find enough entertainment within these walls that hopefully they wouldn't try and sneak away.

In another part, Carmen walks with Apsel, leisurely smile on his face.

"i'm glad you called me!" He says. "business has been wayyyy down in the states, so if there's a good market over here..."

Carmen isn't exactly sure about moving to a new country, but there could be benefits besides financial ones that he keeps to himself for the time being.

@miidnighters saw two children

Carmen DeVolay is painfully normal.

His two adopted children are not.

So when they pass by The Cafe and the twins say in sync they need to go in there, Carmen does his due diligence and takes them in. He holds Canary in his arms because that's how Canary likes to be, and Violet walks stoically beside the two of them. Canary is the first one to spot Barty, however, and he waves a small hand in a tiny, shy wave.

Twins, holding hands, one in tears, the other scared but holding strong. Canary sees Dexter and is afraid. Violet sees Dexter and is determined. They need help. This man will give it, whether he wants to or not. Violet drags his crying brother across the street and stands in front of the man who he's sure will help them.

"we need help." Says Violet, voice squeaky and showing off the fright he's trying so badly to hold back. He glances at Canary who nods to punctuate that yes, they need help. He points back to the small house they had been standing in front of on the other side of the street. Violet continues. "our dad fell and-and we. need help."

Canary cries harder.

The clatter had come from the Carmen's rather unsuccessful attempt at putting his bag on the rack overhead. He was much smaller than John, more than a foot. He was strong, sure, but he didn't exactly know if he had the balance to stand on a seat and situate his bag while the train moved.

His bag still hangs in his arms and he glances up. He can see John is plenty tall enough to put it up for him, but, after just waking the man up, he doesn't ask. Instead, he just sits, holding the bag in his lap, smiling back.

"not much a view this late in the year. everything's dead and no snow to make it pretty yet." He nods to the world passing them by out the window.

"the law! is..." Carmen trails off, trying to decide what he wants to say here. There were some aspects of the law that he found very important. But, then again, he would have once said that kidnapping was something he'd never dream of doing. "...well! anyway."

A soft laugh. He rubs the back of his neck. "the kids are sleeping. do you want some tea, maybe?"

Carmen smiles. If there's one thing he knows, it's this stretch of woods. It feels good to be helpful, especially in this sort of way. He hasn't been able to assist people like this in such a long time, but it still all comes back to him pretty easily.

"i used to be. i'm just visiting today. but i know how to get back to the trail and then back to the start of it!" His tone is bright, eager. "maine woods can be pretty intense, especially if you're not from around here. at least the mosquitos aren't too bad today! here, we'll get back in no time!"

With that, Carmen turns, slowly starting to lead the way.

A despondent stare is all that greets Auggie first thing this morning. The usual happy-go-lucky expression Carmen wears all but gone. No breakfast is cooking. His eyes are red and puffy, though he's no longer actively crying. The smile that he gives at the question doesn't reach his eyes.

"...some bad news, auggie. i got a call last night, it's." A soft sigh. He stands and starts heading for the fridge. "what would you like for breakfast, kiddo? maybe some eggs?"

He's new to the area. Carmen DeVolay and his warm, gentle eyes and ever present smile. A bit tired today, that smile, but he hopes that exhaustion will be banished with the mug of coffee he holds between his hands.

"kids, you know?" He says to Shauna, giving his head a small shake. "canary still barely sleeps through the night. the doctor i took him to wants him to try some kind of medication. i just don't know! he's so young..."
