At first, both this post and the last one were merged together, but I figured I'd leave the crack and alternate universe to a separate thing. Which I did.
Considering the verse where he actually survived ( I know I'm bringing this from vodoo land and it would have been impossible really, but as stated in my guidelines, I will gladly adapt to my partner if they prefer Gil-Galad being kicked back to Middle-Earth instead of surviving ), he was barely aware of what was going on and nobody ever found his body, but he never knew either if they had won or not ( until much later when his wounds would have healed partly, allowing him to seek for information - discreetly - and to understand most by himself that Sauron’s had been weakened but not vanquished ). Obviously, despite surviving, he couldn't reach for those he knew for safety reasons, but also perhaps out of ( misplaced ) pride. He needed to heal before going into the world again, that much was sure and it took him centuries to recover fully. He has kept scars from his doom and though he seems as fair as he has always been, there is still a lingering pain that probably will never leave.
[ Cracky sidenote: would Ereinion have lived, he would have kicked Isildur's ass to the mountain ( not into it unfortunately because Elendil's memory ) and contrarily to Elrond at the time he would have had the political power to do so and argue ( somewhat more movie verse but sue me ). ]
