There was no maniacal force at play or perhaps there was because despite the rather shrill promise the original had made to himself to no longer pursue Hayley, in some righteous attempt at offering her far more opportunity in what could only ever be a compact number of minor joys spread among however long they continued to avoid death but it also was by no means the choice he had any certainty in aspiring to keep up with...though by all senses of such a favorable decision, there were always far more pressing matters at hand. 

“I certainly hope I haven’t interspersed myself at a bad time?”

Guilt was now something familiar to the original, it felt as common as snow in winter and he no longer had the easy way out when it came to acknowledging that feeling; there wasn’t a red door to hide his problems behind anymore instead came the need to learn how to deal with them, how to not feel as if the overwhelming pain was truly taking away all means of his breathing or indeed how easily the return of not just Niklaus but their youngest brother made him feel far more guilty than he was quite sure was possible...-well besides when it came to the presence of one other person. 

Distractions were useful, at least most were until they became tiresome and the original had to find something else to occupy his time.

Was it wrong to believe himself deserving of the afterlife he got, as if in some ways the isolation he ended up with was not punishment enough for the things he’d done. Regret however did seep in, death had been a choice both whether it be with his brother or without...anyone that had known Elijah should’ve known the choice he’d make would be a selfless one because while Hope may not have outwardly blamed him for her mothers death, he wasn’t sure how to forgive himself which would prove an issue. That much he was sure of.

Seeing her in the flesh managed to cause a halt in his breath, though he had to force himself from jumping forward on impulse. Instead he simply allowed his eyes to trail over her features as if it were the last time he would see them. “You’re alive...” he whispered, unable to stop his voice from breaking at such a revelation though his joy if somewhat selfish lay far more for Hope just as it always would. “I’m....-i’m sorry.” It wouldn’t make up for anything, nor would the wells in his eyes or the need to reach out when he did not deserve to. He just needed her to know that he was.

To say the conversation with Tristan had left Elijah a little brooding would’ve been an understatement, he had gone merely due to his disdain and distrust in his first sired and it became evident that perhaps in more than one way Tristan had found a way to truly beat at least Elijah, and vexatiously enough that way had not been intended on...alas for once the parasitic vampire the original loathed had the upper hand. 

Elijah was never the type to air his emotions or wear them on his sleeve, hence only those that knew him well could read through the stoic stance that he took as a means of keeping most from being able to use his emotions against him. This situation spoke no less, he’d taken a seat and poured himself a glass of bourbon which he held for a moment and peered out while his thoughts lay elsewhere.

The wish for a happy mother's day makes Esther smile in response. Though tensions are thick between them, they are still mothers after all. And Esther holds a special reverence for all women who are mothers. If only the child in question had a different father... "There is no need for hostility, now is there? Us mothers have this one day of the year to celebrate our achievements. Let's not taint it with our... differences."
