One day, after a long stretch of silence, a letter arrives for Percy, but the writing on the envelope is not Victor's at all. When Percy should find the time to read it, he'll see that is certainly not from Victor, but from someone else entirely.
Dear Percy,
I am sure this might be a bit confusing to you, so let me explain. My name is Henry Clerval. I've been Victor's friend since childhood. I am currently here in Ingolstadt with him, as I was planning on studying here, but he has grown very, very ill, so I have been taking care of him.
We have been receiving your letters, but he honestly doesn't seem to understand when I read them. It's a terrible fever, you see. He has many convulsions throughout the day and the rest of the time is spent either sleeping or speaking incoherently about things I don't quite understand. He talks about his project with you, how he's done something terrible, how he wishes whatever it is that he's done could be taken back.
I don't mean to worry you, but this is why he hasn't written you back in some time. I am concerned that he might not survive the winter if this keeps up. I'm doing all that I can. If you'd like, I can keep you updated. I understand that he adores you.
I hope this finds you well, Henry Clerval
