new years eve. / past

            the young thirteen year old angel lee looked out her window. it was a supposedly, typical snowy day in astana. maybe it was typical to others, but it wasn’t for her. this had been the day of one of her major sufferings. it had been two years, she wouldn’t forget about it now. not that she would, ever. decades could pass by now, she still wouldn’t even forget the last of her mother’s breath and her words.

            left with nothing but,

            “jieun-ah. don’t cry.” her mother’s weak and bony hands assisted to wipe her tears away.

            “mama loves you, you will be an amazing woman.” jieun didn’t know what to say. she was biting her lower lip, fighting the urge to cry but she couldn’t. she was a cry baby, she was only eleven years old. how would one react in such a situation, realising that they had lost someone who meant everything in the world to them? pure devastation.

            “mama, i love you too.”

            “please don’t go..” she clutched onto her mother’s hand, a firm grip but who knew how much time she had left?

            “jieun, never.. forget.. who you are.”

            and that was the last time, she’d ever see her mother ever again. the next time would be to burn her ashes, have her mother cremated and a funeral.

            but of course, no one could even replace her mother. she just had hope her father wouldn’t make the wrong choice and remarry even through his depression and abrasive personality. if anyone were to understand her father, she would be the perfect candidate. though, the unnecessary alcoholic habits and neglecting jieun, damaging her and hitting her weren’t at all what a father should had been doing.

            and now, on new years eve. angel had no one by her side. not even her father who went out drinking. she too, had developed depression on her own. her mother was the only person who was ever truly there for her through the good and bad times, supporting her no matter what. how could she keep on going without her? it wasn’t impossible, but she made a promise to be strong.

            to do whatever it takes to be a successful woman, right-- mommy?
