How would the Tokyo ghoul re cast react if their cheerful and caring S/o had a very tragic and dark past?
I’m not sure what you meant by the cast of Tokyo Ghoul RE, so I just wrote scenarios for as many new characters I could think up scenarios for uwu
SASAKI overhears details about his partner’s past when some fool decided to use those bygone tribulations to make jabs at their character. He’s seconds away from stepping in, telling the other not to make things up about his pater, until he sees his partner’s standard amiable visage adopt a frigidity that could only stem from those events being true. The insolent individual is mercilessly torn down with a few quips from his partner, and his partner turns to exit the room, before noticing him standing there. “Ah! I’m sorry you had to see such an unpleasant side of me.” Their pleasant demeanor returns and summarizes the events in greater detail, not wanting to seem like they were trying to keep it a secret. No words were necessary at that time. Sasaki shakes his head and embraces them; they didn’t have to face their demons alone, he would gladly be their sword and shield. He sees a watery smile from his lover—they heard him loud and clear and would count on him in the future.
URIE remains silent as he overhears a conversation that wasn’t meant for his ears about his partner. He’s only gathered fragments, but he pieces them together to uncover a chapter of their life he doesn’t know about. His face does not betray what he now knows. He views his partner with a new level of respect; surviving when the odds were against them without becoming embittered by circumstance. He himself has fallen prey to his icy hatred of the Kuroiwa family, so to see them go the opposite direction towards blazing kindness struck him in a curious way. “Urie!” Ah, there they come now, with that stupidly bright smile of theirs. Nodding to acknowledge their greeting, he ruffles their hair in a rare display of affection. They didn’t need to know that he knew, not yet. In due time, Urie would let them know, but for now he resolved to protect the heart of the cheery person at his side. He would bear all their bitterness and sorrow for them, if only to continue hearing them call his name with warmth.
SHIRAZU is surprised to learn that his partner has remained the cheerful, gentle person he’s come to know. Hearing that they were able to weather the storm without losing that optimism he had come to associate with their being is admirable, if nothing else. Without really thinking, he seeks out his partner and confronts them about it. “Hey, why didn’t you tell me you went through all that back then?” His partner blinks, surprised at the sudden encounter, before it registers what he’s referring too. His partner remarks that what they went through was no big deal (though, Shirazu would beg to differ) and a common enough story that they didn’t feel it was necessary. After all, everyone had their own burdens to bear. He can't really argue with that sort of reasoning, and finds himself nodding vigorously, agreeing with them. However, he makes it a point to tell them that if the burden became too great, he would gladly take the brunt of their sorrows.
MUTSUKI is surprised when his partner opens up to him about the events that led them to this point. He can’t help but feel alarmed despite the events being in the past, and wants to help his partner. He knows all too well that the past has ways of sticking to the soul no matter how many years have passed and is concerned that his partner may still be suffering from events dead, but yet to be buried. Although not confident that he can help his s/o in the ways he wants to, Mutsuki doubles and redoubles his efforts in their relationship and endeavors to be an anchor for them when the tide of the past threatens to drag them out and drown them beneath the waves. It isn’t much, but now that he knows, he will do everything in his power to keep that radiant smile on his partner’s face.
