Since 'tis the season again, here's your friendly reminder, that harassing other people into donating, or changing their lifestyle during Christmas season is not in fact, making the world a better place. It's just making it easier to control.
What do I mean with that?
During Christmas season, it has become - especially in communities strongly permeated by western cultures - a common tradition to a) actively promote charities or b) actively promote lifestyle changes "for a better world" (especially concerning vegan lifestyles, environmentally conscious lifestyles, etc.). And while that in itself is not a bad thing, what's with this supposedly being the season of love and kindness and all, in recent years, especially here in online communities, this tradition has been changed into a near perverse guilt tripping culture.
Instead of "let's share our love this season, by working together for this good cause" it has become "how dare you enjoy the season, when x bad thing is still happening". And I get it. Sometime it feels frustrating to see all the bad stuff happening and how seemingly easy it would be, if everyone was just working together. But this is not helping at all!
Before you share a donation post, or one of those suggestions on how to change your life to make the world better posts, I sincerely beg you to stop and consider first: Is this post positively encouraging others to help, or is it actively trying to shame them into helping.
Because - and I can't believe people are still surprised by this - shaming people into doing, what you think is right, is not making them morally better. It is just teaching them, that shame is more important than kindness.
