Cate still couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that she hadn’t seen Catherine in person since the Halloween incident a few weeks ago. It had been a while, and it had taken a lot of courage for her to talk to Catherine again but it was worth it. Those brief seconds of panic after accidentally dialing her number led to their longest call yet: an honest, raw, and emotional conversation between two women who, instead of breaking an incipient friendship, ended up connecting in a new and unexpectedly deep way... deeper than Cate could have imagined. Since then, they talked on the phone almost every night after a long day. They shared laughs and short anecdotes about their lives; they got to know each other even better. And not only that, during the day they texted, sending random pictures or sharing something funny. At night, there was always that much-awaited call, sometimes lasting until one of them fell asleep. Cate had fallen asleep more than once thinking about their real encounter, finally apologizing face-to-face, reconnecting properly, looking into her eyes, touching her, and feeling her presence close again.
Filming in Greece had wrapped up, and this time she traveled home in a better mood. She was relaxed and excited to see her kids for a couple of days before flying to Italy for a special engagement. She needed to raise her voice for the causes she cared about, so she accepted an invitation to meet with the Pope a ceremony that held deep meaning for her. The plan was clear: she would spend a couple of days there. But instead, she rearranged everything to fly to NYC earlier than expected. She didn’t mention anything to Catherine, who wasn’t expecting her until the following week. She had work to get done there but a few days there to enjoy of the city and the first snowflakes falling without any rush and especially to finally make that encounter happen.
The flight had been long, and she was exhausted, but after a power nap, a long bath, and with the sparkling lights of New York City as the perfect backdrop, she felt revived. She called her kids, and then she finally decided to make the call she had been waiting to make. “Hey, Tisha” her husky, deep voice greeted the woman on the other end of the line. “I just woke up from the most delicious nap ever” she said, fully aware that Catherine believed Cate was in London or still in Italy. “I woke up and noticed how beautiful Central Park looks… I didn’t expect that New York was so cold already” She smirked mischievously. “Do you think a coat is enough to go out tonight? And if you happen to be free… I don’t know… maybe you could join me and give me a little tour of the city.”
