* The news had been broken to the young monster late that night sounding like more of a command than anything, and Susie knew that she couldn't argue.
* More than that though, she knew she wouldn't argue. This move was a long time coming, and even she could see that. For as long as Susie could remember, her parents were only ever scraping by, and the threatening letters and phone calls that they would get only got more frequent. She never knew exactly what they were doing to make it work, or who was sending the threats, but she knew it wasn’t good.
* Not that they ever cared about what she thought of it, of course. Susie was also a part of her parents’ attempts to keep themselves out of trouble. Having a child was their ticket to all kinds of handouts, and they didn’t even try to hide it. She wasn’t a person to them, she was just a tool.
* The new place was an apartment building, probably not much different than the one they lived in now, in a place called Hometown. That was funny to the young monster. Hometown. Who named a place Hometown?
* Not that it mattered.
* What mattered was that her parents had wanted to leave as soon as possible, and had followed up the news of their move with a, “Go get packed. Now.”
* And so she had. She had gathered what little she actually owned and shoved it in the backpack that she had stopped using months ago and got into her parents’ beat up old car. It didn’t take long after that for them to get moving, and Susie watched the old building as it faded into the distance. She’d never been very attached to her life here, having never had any friends, but that apartment was still the only house she’d ever known.
* She slumped down in the backseat while her parents bickered with each other about things she didn’t care to listen to, silently wishing she’d somehow slip through the seat without them noticing. She could survive without them around, she already knew that. It’s not like they took care of her anyway.
* The next thing she knew, her mom was shaking her awake and telling her to hurry up. They had arrived.
* Still a little groggy, Susie again grabbed the backpack and stumbled up the stairs into the apartment building. She looked around for either of her parents, but instead caught the eye of a kid who looked to be around her age. They were reptilian, like her, but yellowish and without any arms.
* “Whoa! A new kid! Hi! What’s your name!?”
* Susie growled at the other monster, making sure to give the other kid a good view of her teeth as she did so. They yelped in surprise and turned to run off.
* Pleased with herself, Susie turned to see her dad standing over her and looking as unhappy as he always did as he let out a growl of his own.
* “The hell are you doing standing around out here? Get inside, before I make you.”
* Susie grumbled a mocking repetition of what her dad had just said, and pushed her way into the new apartment. Her parents had already claimed the only bedroom, so she didn’t bother going any further in than the living room and tossing her bag onto the torn up couch that she couldn’t believe had successfully made the trip.
* “You’re going to school tomorrow, Susie.”
* Her mom had been the one to growl at her next.
* “Don’t fuck up like you did at your last one.”
* “Whatever,” Susie had growled back.
* She had already decided that she wasn’t going to go to school. Of course, she wasn’t going to sit around with them the next day either. Despite everything, she was still a kid, and the curiosity over her new surroundings was eating away at her. She would probably wander into the school eventually, but there were much bigger plans in her mind.
* She had no idea what the new place had to offer yet, but as she dumped her backpack out beside her, she knew that it had better prepare itself. Susie was the new kid in town, and Hometown would never be the same.

[ i have a kind of out there headcanon that susie actually has a surprisingly good singing voice. she used to sing herself to sleep at night, and sometimes she still does if it’s a bad enough night for her. that’s why she falls asleep so easily if ralsei sings to her in chapter 1. ]
