life was never that great for shuichi iguchi, but at least he had his family. they never really...... understood him, but they tried. and it’s not like they were all so different from each other. a family of heteromorphs with reptile mutant quirks — you’d think that if nothing else, they’d face the challenges of their appearance together. and they did, as much as they could.
but shuichi was by far the unluckiest of the family.
there’s rin, his father, who bears the tail, sharp teeth, and spines of an iguana, but none of the other features — no scales, no green skin, no snout. not the flashiest quirk, but a fairly strong one ; had he decided to do anything with his life beyond working in construction, it could’ve been quite handy.
his grandmother on his father’s side, yoshiko, has the black and yellow speckled skin of a fire salamander, and she can produce toxic venom. not the kind of person you’d want to have angry at you! but she loves her family, and they love her.
his mother, shun, has the tail of a racerunner, as well as streaks in her hair and pale markings on her skin mirroring the common six-stripe pattern of the species. her quirk grants her superspeed, with her tail giving her an extra boost as well as balance. she was a competitive runner in school until she settled down — she married young.
mother’s younger brother, shuichi’s uncle ryuuji, has a bearded dragon mutation. his head resembles that of the aforementioned lizard, but the rest of his body is fully humanoid. like his reptilian counterpart, he can be aggressive, has sharp teeth and isn’t afraid to use them, and also produces a low-toxicity venom. he doesn’t do much — he works at the market in town part time, just enough to pay rent which is the only reason he’s living with his sister and her family.
and lastly, ekiko, shuichi’s little sister. her quirk is chameleon, and it’s exactly what it sounds like. she can camouflage herself, and she’s blessed enough to not have very many mutations — large green eyes which are honestly just really pretty, a few patches of skin that are more like scales, her nose and mouth a little more angled and snout-like than human, but otherwise, she’s the most normal-looking of the bunch.
and then there’s shuichi himself, and his unassuming gecko quirk. he was unlucky enough to be born with a full mutation, and no useful abilities beyond sticking to walls. and as much as his family loved him, they could never understand what he went through — at school, even just out in public. he was bullied, ridiculed, got beaten up on more than one occasion. and so when by some miracle he finished high school, he basically locked himself in the basement of his parents’ house, playing videogames and cosplaying. they all tried to be supportive, but nothing helped, and his anger and frustration only festered.
when he finally left home at 21 to join the league of villains, he didn’t tell anyone. how could he? they’d never understand his reasoning, and though he could’ve simply said he was striking out on his own, he knew he wouldn’t be able to stay in touch. and the goodbyes would just be too hard. so he left in the middle of the night, walking alone into town where he caught the train at 5:30am — the only time it passes through the town each day.
he thinks about them all the time, more than he’d like to. he tries not to, because it’s painful, but he sees reminders of them everywhere. he wonders if they’re worried about him, if they think he’s dead, if they still look for him. or if they know where he is, who he’s become. that’s part of the reason he hasn’t killed anyone, and still refuses to. he knows they’d be disappointed in him turning down the path of villainy, but he holds onto a distant hope that if he ever saw them again, they might forgive him anyone, but taking a life — that would be unforgivable, and he knows that.
he loves them dearly. if only he’d told them that while he had the chance.
