Questlove to Direct Sly Stone Documentary
Questlove is heading back to the director’s chair.
After picking up a couple of awards at Sundance for his directorial debut about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, “Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised),” the Roots drummer announced plans to helm a documentary about Sly Stone.
“Let’s do this,” Questlove wrote on social media. “The way I see it, I can teach lessons three paragraphs at a time in (Instagram), or we can take it higher.”
A statement quoted in the Hollywood Reporter describes Stone as a musician “breaking all the rules at a time when doing so was extremely challenging, even dangerous.
“The pressure of explosive mainstream pop success and the responsibility of representing black America forced him to walk the fine line of impossible expectations.”
Common will executive produce the as-yet-untitled film, which has no release date.
“It goes beyond saying that Sly’s creative legacy is in my DNA - it’s a black musician’s blueprint,” Questlove said. “To be given the honor to explore his history and legacy is beyond a dream for me.”
