Imperial Grand Admiral
How I got into cosplaying.
Since I was 13 I had been doing medieval reenactments in different organizations across the south and mid west. I got into it because on the bulliten board at a local used book store with a community room was a flyer for a local group that would hold crafting sessions. The first thing I learned was how to work with leather, then sew, then how to make chainmail. Throughout the years I learned a lot more through experimenting and trial and error and learning from people better than me. At a certain point, I started going to dinner in my medieval garb and armor after our weekly practice at the park, and at first I was nervous about being dressed funny in public. You’d get questions, sure, but most times it was people staring at you and even mocking you when they don’t think you can hear them. But over time I got used to it and it bothered me less and less since I was in a group. I eventually stopped doing those organizations, especially after my leg was broken last year and how I can’t run and some days it hurts to walk. But before that I was comfortable enough to start cosplaying at conventions. And while my first few cosplays were very simple, I started creating more elaborate ones myself because I saw (not to insult anyones cosplays, mine arent perfect by anymeans) that I was on par with a lot of the more experienced cosplayers I met because of having been sewing and making armor for a decade. A lot of what I learned in that time overlaps well with cosplaying. Some stuff like worbla I had no idea about, but other stuff like making leather armor as I did for my shera or friends cosplays most people hadn’t seen done before. So because of that I still have a ways togo before I get invited to conventions as a guest, but Im learning where my gaps are and load up with costuming and makeup panels at every con I go to.
