All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr will be the book discussed in English and Spanish.

Anthony Doerr elegantly interweaves the parallel stories of two children doing their best to survive World War II; Werner, a German orphan, and Marie-Laure, a blind girl. Marie-Laure’s father designs a miniature world for his daughter, a replica of their actual neighborhood that enables Marie-Laure to navigate the world. In Germany, Werner’s brilliant mind catches the attention of the Nazis and they use him to track the resistance. This Pulitzer Prize winning novel is a beautiful tale of survival and morality in a war-torn Europe.

Summer Reading is Coming!

This week, the Pioneer Room takes you into the archival vault to showcase a rarely seen collection. Miniature post cards and photo booklets, like the ones featured here, were often mailed to family and friends to commemorate travels, and thus became popular collectibles. These miniatures, donated to the Pioneer Room by Blanche von Seggern, member of one of Escondido’s pioneering families, features postcards and booklets from Los Angeles, Boulder Dam (now called Hoover Dam), and Muir Woods. May the 4th Day @escolibrary was a success!

Yesterday, over 170 Star Wars enthusiasts of all-ages enjoyed our “May the 4th Be With You” program. It was amazing to see how everyone was brought together by this community program, which included meet-and-greets with Star Wars characters, storytime, a costume contest, and a light saber craft. This program was made possible by the volunteer Star Wars character impersonators of the local 501st Legion and the generous donations of our Friends of the Escondido Public Library.
