I think that's part of why The Office has remained so popular over the years. Because yeah, obviously it's a tv show, so it's exaggerated, but it still gets the heart of normal life. As Pam says there's beauty in ordinary things.

Yes!!! Totally agree. I think The Office is kind of a miracle of a tv show because the premise of The Office, or at least the British version of it, as I understand it, I haven’t seen it, isn’t that there’s beauty in ordinary things but that there’s humor in it. But the American show developed beyond that! It started out with such a truthfully ugly and plain aesthetic with absolutely no sheen bc there was the opportunity for jokes within that context- in many ways the setting was the joke- but then it became a story about love and the setting, even the ugliness of it, makes it a story we need and are drawn to in this age of Sheen-Filled Television. Because it feels real.

Also Michael Scott rant ahead you didn’t ask for that is not related:

Michael- ugh I love Michael so much and I love him so much not even because he got an actual arc but because something about him and for him, something about his life that was always there that started off as a joke gradually deepened and became real.

He starts off the show with these ridiculous statements about how these people are his family and he’s the world’s best boss and the joke is that this manager at a middling paper sales company in a middling town could think that but THEN it just- anakskak that somehow comes true!!!

They do become a weird, flawed family and they DO love each other and they do love HIM and Jim tells him with tears in his eyes “you’re the best boss I ever had” and they sing the song from Rent for him and he cries and all of that is real. All of the things Michael wanted so badly happen almost, not quite but almost just because he wants it so badly.

He almost wills it into existence because he himself is so Loudly Looking for it. And he is ridiculous and wild un-self-aware but also he is no Todd Packer. He really wanted to find love, he really wanted it, he wanted it so badly and the search is almost what saves him. Just that wanting it to be true and real so badly, and I 😭😭😭💜

Yes!! I think the office hits so hard because the sheen was never there so no one ever thought they were telling a love story or even a drama so they never messed it up with falsehoods. It was just a comedy, it was just for jokes, and the whole time love just grew quietly up in the spaces of their ordinary, sheen-less work.

Ok so that pobular artist post has some rebuttals on it with art that ISNT the same skinny white girl in different wigs and i just wanna say Its not that that particular artist (or any artist) is incapable of range or anything. Clearly they are. Its that they have a VERY obvious comfort zone where everyone is pale and skinny. Any time they've broken out of that was imposed on them by the fact it was fanart or something. But given the chance to design what they want, their way, its ALWAYS the same pale, thin person with different wigs. THATS whats being pointed out. Have a butter zone as an artist, but please examine WHY thats your butter zone and explore ways to expand it.
