It was just her luck that she'd gotten to share a bunk with the unsociable girl who'd gotten irritated when she'd tried to give a piece of bread to Sasha.
Not because Christa disliked her or anything -- not yet, anyway, though half the girls' barracks had already seemed to have made up their minds about her and it was clear what they thought (had she managed to offend everyone already?) -- but because she'd been unnervingly honest in a different way than Christa was used to. It wasn't brutal in all senses of the word, though the girl was sharp; it cut through to her, made her think about things that she'd promised herself not to think about.
Christa didn't want to have to think about those things. It was enough that she'd gotten herself here, to train with the rest of them, and she'd earn her keep and get what she wanted in the end and that was it. She'd come to get away from where she'd been, not to be interrogated about why she'd tried to help people. It was just decency, wasn't it? Kindness. She had to be kind to everyone.
So why had the other girl taken such an interest, to the point of demeaning her for it?
"Um..."
Christa's gaze was turned away from her bunkmate, but given they'd barely talked since their first conversation over Sasha's prone body and they'd both just come back to the girls' barracks before anyone else had -- separately, too, which just made it more awkward -- she felt that some conversation had to be made. It was only nice, after all.
"What was your name again? I...don't remember hearing it." After another short moment, she raised her eyes to meet the other girl's, a hesitant but kind smile on her lips. "I'm Christa, by the way."
