⌖?

Distrust. Comes naturally with any stranger, or mostly- stranger.

But more than just the expected weariness, Rex sets off Henry's risk alert. Doesn't know what the guy's capable of, but he has an idea about the people he surrounds himself with. Enough to start-

-Contemplating. What's the best strategy should it come down to it? What weaknesses could the guy have? What strengths? He'd always been taught that, with shifters, it's run away first and ask questions later; even one of these creatures could take out a well-trained squad. Except now, he's leech... And leeches are manageable. Still, underestimating anyone is a death sentence, and with Violette in the picture... fuck knows whether he's somehow managed to maintain his more feral half along with the beats to encourage it.

⌖ (For Gabriel)

Trust, and Devotion. He doesn't know what Gabriel is, be he an angel or demon or one touched by some greater force-- but Henry knows him as Gabriel. The man who fought by his side all those years ago. Who saved Henry's life when it might have been wiser to run and call for backup. Who met Henry at the Cathedral alone, when he could've trapped him and handed him over to the Gladius Dei whom he'd abandoned. And so there is trust, unwavering, even more so for being trusted in return. Because Henry may not believe in God anymore, not the same one, nor follow the words of saints anymore, but he still has--

--Faith. Not in those all-encompassing wings which blocked the moonlight that slipped within the Cathedral, but in the person that stood beneath them. Nor for the glowing seeming of divinity upon molten hair and a body of melting steel, but for the heart and mind beneath it. Faith, through Gabriel's desire to do good despite the weight and pain he seems to carry, a burden known only to Gabriel himself. And if such a person can think so highly of Henry, trust him that much, then perhaps...he is not as lost as he thought.

Even so, he can't escape the Fear. For as much as Gabriel has trusted Henry, laid himself bare before him as much as he dared, so has Henry trusted Gabriel. But trust is a dangerous thing. Because one day, Gabriel could turn on him. Give up on him. Seek to use the knowledge he has to destroy him, and, against that, Henry would be powerless. ...Sometimes, it's best not to think for too long. The mind wanders to dark places.

Pain. It hurts, worse than any scar he's gained before, though he should've seen it coming. He trusted too easily, cared too much, put down his sword and took off his armour-- only to end in Fucking-

-Betrayal. Because of course it would. They life, each and every one of them, rotten to the core. Even those who are a bit better, they'll never escape what they are, the beast within their veins. She should've seen it coming. That bastard needs to-

-Stay the fuck away. Whatever the hell else the leech wants to do doesn't matter, whatever he says or thinks doesn't fucking matter, as long as he stays the fuck away.

⌖ eyes emoji

Fear. Terror, the sort that sticks to you like countless eyes fixed on your back, squinting in delight like your pain is their morning entertainment.

Helplessness, despair, and for good reason. Running away from hellish creatures in the dreaming, and from the cold sweat of the nightmares in the waking.

Panic. Over a creature that knows too much, sees too much, and there's no way to stop it. The chill of being in its domain, laid bare in your fear and horror and despair, with every uncertainty and guilt trailing behind you, in a place where the sunlight can't reach you.

Henry doesn’t know where he is.

That should be the most concerning part about all this, being somewhere unknown with no bloody idea how he ended up there-- but, alas, that honour goes to the snow-white wilderness that sprawls around him, endless towards every direction.

He can’t feel the cold, though he shivers out of habit, and he notes there’s no fog where he breathes despite the icy crystals which have turned the trees into the brilliant statues of a winter landscape, reflecting the dim moonlight above.

The snow sinks under his boots with each step, but he can’t feel it; a fact that only makes that gut-clenching feeling of tension and unease even worse as he begins to walk, slowly making his way through the darkened woods, lit only by the last few moments of the sunset.

It will be completely dark soon, and he can tell he’ll feel even more lost than he already does...
