family dinner | Rowland family + Carver family + Anika
“No,” Marie was laughing, disbelief in her voice. “18 months as roommates and only a month ago the two of you started gaming together?”
“Yeah. And that’s when we worked out we used to play WoW together, too. Online, you know?”
“We know what you mean, angel,” Austin called from his own place. Gabe’s father had taken a place on the floor of the kitchen and was petting Millie, who, once he got over the sudden arrival of a group of strangers, had adjusted pretty quickly to the attention. Marie and Austin loved animals just as much as their son, and had taken to Millie Pippen immediately - and Marie had agreed with Flynn’s original point, that Pippen was a much better name.
“He means he changed your password and has been playing with your little avatar,” his mom clarified.
Anika, who’d settled on the bench despite Marie’s half-hearted attempts to get her away from the food preparation area, snorted. “Even I know that’s shi - uh, not great.” She didn’t even bother trying to hide her grimace, still not totally believing she’d agreed to try to ‘behave’ - by traditional standards, not her own - for the stupid dinner. Though the winged wonder had insisted his moms cooking was even better than his own and Flynn’s, so she hadn’t been about to say no. She could pick her battles.
Gabe wasn’t totally sure what his parents were thinking of Flynn’s girlfriend, but they’d greeted her as politedly as they’d greeted anyone. And she’d endured Austin’s questions about her power - despite obviously not being comfortable with it. He owed her now, he knew he did, though he wasn’t sure what he could do to return the favor. “Please tell me you don’t play PvP. Dad, if you ruin my averages...”
Austin laughed, rubbing Millie’s ears as he glanced up at his son, helping his mom cook, just like he used to. It was all incredibly nostalgic. “I’ll tell you whatever you want, if it makes you feel better.”
