Hey, Chrissy, everyone knows your husband is up to no good. Leland has slept with everything he can on this side of the universe and yet, one half of your bed goes cold. Not to mention the murders... tsk, tsk, what's it like loving a monster?
The joke about captains having big empty beds was starting to hit a little close to home. His bedroom, compartmentalized as it was, was barely big enough to fit the damn thing, and it bounced around the corners like a fluffy screensaver. When he was ‘single’ (when Leland was off on one of his many 31 missions that could keep him away for years at a time), the bed got pushed into a corner so that Chris could bundle up under blankets and sleep warm, all on his lonesome. Whenever Leland showed up, the bed got pushed to the middle of a wall so that the nightstand could split into two and they could each have their own. On Chris’s, whether Leland was there or not, was a revolving stack of padds and empty mugs, accompanied by his favorite picture of Leland. On Leland’s, Chris always put out his reading glasses.
But Leland had left this morning. Bright and early, but not too early that Chris couldn’t give him a proper sendoff, but now he was feeling maudlin. Maudlin and a little depressed. He lounged on his side of the bed and wallowed in self-pity, because he didn’t have the heart to move the bed back into the corner or clean up the plates and dirty sheets. After all, if Leland hadn’t left, he’s not single again and Leland will be back soon and they can dirty up the sheets some more. Right?
The photo on his nightstand is one of his favorites. It’s Leland, barely woken up on the day they graduated from the Academy. Such youngsters. But they really do go that far back, and so does Chris’s loyalty to his man. He always is and always will be, no matter the distance and years spent apart. If Leland feels differently, he’s never articulated it, so Chris can only assume satisfaction from their letters, comms, and occasional sketches passed back and forth.
He reaches for his padd to check if Leland’s shuttle has left yet. But it’s Leland’s padd, still open, and mentioning his mission. Chris registers it, but just as soon Leland is back in to retrieve it and give him a passionate kiss goodbye, so he forgets.
It will only be in three months, when the Enterprise is called to rescue refugees fleeing that same planet as the society collapses, that Chris will realize in his soul what happened. He can make urgent calls to Section 31, making sure his husband is long gone from the planet, but that doesn’t cover up what he knows is likely the truth. It would break his heart, if his blind spot for Leland wasn’t a black hole protected by kisses, loyalty, and their bed.
