The Oxpecker.
James is glaring at the rusted bolt he’s been trying to coax loose for the last ten minutes even as he feels, more than hears or sees, Sam step up behind him.
“No.” he says before the other can even take a breath. “Whatever you’re about to suggest, I tried it and it’s not working.”

Her brows rose. “If I’d intended it to be, I’d have said ‘Hey, do you want to go on a brunch date with me?’ rather than the way I did,” she replied. “Plus, I’d probably take you somewhere a little less chaotic than a Waffle House.” She paused for a moment. “—Were you hoping it was?”
He blinked at her, two quick flutters of his lids. “No.” maybe a little too quickly. “Not that you aren’t ...” a vague gesture at her. “perfectly lovely. I mean, I’m sure you’re ... I’m just shoveling my own grave here, aren’t I?”
A deep breath in, which he released in a slow breath. “I ... don’t think I’m ready for a date. With the whole ...” another vague gesture, this time at his head and his arm.
“Doesn’t mean you like them,” Alice mused. “I just wanted to let you know there were options. Also, if I had not intention of buying, I wouldn’t have asked. My general rule is the asker pays, so make of that what you will.”
For a moment, he stared at her, eyes narrow and unwavering. When he looked away, he did so by dipping his head into a shrug, his right hand coming up to scratch at the back of his neck.
“Yeah. Guess I could eat. You uh ... this ...” another suspicious narrowing of his eyes. “This isn’t a date, right?”
“Would you like to?” she asked. “Go to a Waffle House, I mean. Eat some hashbrowns, eggs, waffles?” Alice shrugged. “They’re a food a lot of people like.”
“I was brainwashed. Not braindead. I know what waffles are.” he grumbled, arms folded. “You’re buying.”
"A good man."
He hasn’t said anything yet, but he remembers her. He wonders if she remembers him. All of it.
“If I ever was a good man, that changed a long, long time ago.”
This time I was almost sure you wouldn't wake up.
He looked up with his brows drawn together. “This time?”, navigating the labyrinth of his destroyed head was still like walking through cobwebs.
