homer or vergil? 👀

Oooooh good question, that’s really hard, especially since I kinda. Consider them something of a package deal, you read one and then you read the other and they’re in conversation with each other (and then later with Dante but let’s not bring him into this), with how the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aeneid all weave together.

If I HAD to choose, gun to my head, I’d probably go with Homer just because I love the Iliad so much, especially that incredible cold ending “And so they buried Hector, breaker of horses.” It just sums up the entire story in that one line. But Vergil is still really cool.

Also re Homer did you know years ago I drew a picture of Porcia Catonis crying over the painting of Hector and Andromache in Iliad VI as described in Plutarch’s Life of Brutus and then a few years later it was discovered by some classicists at Harvard and a professor really loved it and used it in a blog post and recently his assistant contacted me about using it in a book so someday a drawing I did in the GIMP bc I was having OTP feels in my freshman year of college will be in an academic book if all goes well.
